You will be fine on Disappointment. It is actually ideal because of the dog sledding tracks. Without their trail, the slush will halt your trip. I have stayed on this lake numerous times. Worse case scenario you find one other winter camper group on the lake. It is a big lake, they will not get i n your way. I promise:)

I find it is a crap shoot in winter. Last February we stayed at Caribou, only one portage from Clearwater. There were a lot of icefishermen on Clearwater. You could see them set up the whole way down the lake. But once we hit Caribou, there was nothing. Had that lake to ourselves the whole time we were there.

Thinking of going winter camping on Disappointment Lake. Is there alot of traffic on this lake? Lots of people?

I'm looking to get to a secluded lake with lots of silence, no people and solitude.

Any suggestions?

We found it to be pretty secluded two winters ago. There was terrible slush conditions in the area but the dog sled trail was awesome to ski on. A dogsled here or skier there is not a big deal to me. We even saw a big pack of wolves running across the ice on the way in on snowbank.

There will be some traffic through the area as the winter trail used by the dog sled teams, goes the length of disappointment, through the swamps out the east end, works its way up to muzzle and then forks to either go to Thomas or Ima.

I wouldn't think that a lake with a 1/2 mile portage from a drive to and motor lake in BWCAW would fit the bill...I could be wrong though.
I know when I was passing that area hiking I could hear motor boats on Snowbank...FYI.

Edit: In winter all of it is pretty secluded unless it is a well known Lake Trout lake...let us know what you find.
