I haven't used a white gas stove at all but as far as using propane we brought a 1 lb tank with a burner and we were able to boil enough water for 5 days for 2 of us and heat up a couple quick meals. We were boiling water right out of the lake and it would only 6-8 minutes to get a good sized kettle boiling.

Way more efficient to just be able to get your water instead of melting snow for it. Depending on where you are going try to get water rather then melt the snow. Look for it in streams or bring a small ice auger or ice chisel to make a hole.

I'm trying to figure out the snow melting alternatives for a 4 day winter cold camping trip, with a light sled/pulk. Got my white gas stoves now (omnifuel). So how much fuel, and what size bottles?

I was thinking of getting 2-4 of the ~1.5liter MSR bottles. But I'm wondering if it is more efficient to bring a one gallon can of fuel and then just refill one fuel bottle? Or should I just bring an ice auger to drill for water? Burn wood? Bring one of those small propane tanks?

Ideas?

Thanks.
