it's tough to plan a winter trip. snow and ice conditions change often. some days you can ski for miles with no effort, others you will be struggling to cover a couple of miles in the slush. you can go most almost anywhere you want, depending on the snow. our trips typically are out and back, breaking our own trail and following it back. you can run across thin ice anywhere that there is a current in the water. these won't always be obvious, nor will the slush. we've always skied and cold tented, hot tented a couple of years ago and found it oddly unsatisfying. we try to keep things light weight. a concern is the cold tempts that are typical, 40 below can be lethal if you don't know what your doing. i avoid overnight trips in january and early february as i am no longer interested in seeing how much cold i can survive. also in the good old days cars never wanted to start after sitting out in 30 below for a week.
