I recently reread The Falcon, the autobiography of John Tanner. This book chronicles Tanner's life among the Ojibwa after being captured at the age of 9 in Kentucky. Much of the narrative takes place in Minnesota border country incuding Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods. A major incident in Tanner's life happened on the Maligne River in Quetico. I have hearTanner Lake and Tanner Rapids in Quetico are named after John Tanner.

The autobiography is a chronological recount of Tanner's decades living with the Ojibwa. Daily life, especially hunting, is detailed along with observations about native culture, religion, and the fur trade. At times the book is repetitive going over hunt after hunt. Some might find this tedious and lose interest. This was my experience the first time I read the book and I skimmed over some sections.
