In a remote grassy area here in Minneapolis the wood ticks seem to only be active around +60° and sunny, yet the other day I was on Spoon Lake and had wood ticks crawling on my dog and it was 46°, windy and rainy. Tough northern ticks I guess.

Ticks are active as long as temps are above freezing--especially adult ticks.

I do know if the sun is out I have seen deer ticks crawl close to 32 degrees F. and snow on the ground. Wood ticks like it warmer usually. Winter ticks found on moose I am not sure.

They can crawl at minus 40. They do use snow for insulation. Ask me how I know.. Or better yet more direct, ask the dog.

I have found that ticks usually stop crawling after they hitch a ride on my permethrin treated clothes and that observation seems independent of temperature

I find that 400-500 degrees on a stove burner usually does the trick.

Yeah, deer ticks seem to like the cold. I've seen them well below freezing. Never saw a regular tick below freezing. I think the wet has really made them breed... it's bad up here. Pemetherin! !!
