Boundary Waters Quetico Forum :: Listening Point - General Discussion :: Red Canoes Only?

There are those who prefer "Red" canoes to the more aesthetic and enduring to nature "Green" canoes... To each their own, I personally prefer "Green" or natural like my Souris River. Speed is optional, who wants to go fast unless you are trying to outrun a thunder storm or wind!

A background note to this color debate, a favorite paddler on this site who passed a while back (Jan aka Kanoes) and I got into this discussion several years ago when comparing our Wenonah Wilderness Canoes, his of course was red and mine green!
I miss those debates we had in the forum and chatroom concerning such trival things... The main thing is to enjoy your canoe!

Keep her out of the sun as much as possible... Also UV protection on her. Otherwise that beautiful dark red will turn a milky pinkish...you will be sad

Found that out with my green SR. Sanded her and varnish her a couple times since but I would never have left her on top the suburban so much if I knew oxidation was an issue with them. And with varnishing it seems the scratches seem to show up more readily.

Surprised there isn’t a red boat only group. Picked her up this fall- nameless for now.

Dr Bob,

Your Red, Green, Blue canoe story got me laughing.

I have a 1979 Green Mad River 16 Royalex Explorer hanging in my garage. I haven’t paddled it in years. Heavy for sure but it was the first canoe I ever paddled. I just can’t part with it.

I am certainly rooting for you Dr Bob ... stay strong !

A number of years ago we were on our way to Steven's point from Green Bay to visit our son at UWSP and we made the mistake of stopping at a dealer around there. Here he has 3 OT 17' Penobscott blems made of Royalex (when it was still available). A Green, a Red, and a Blue canoe. I was looking for a couple more canoes for the scout trip and we had the bucks. There is no way would the war dept. would allow that blue canoe to go on the green suburban. (could not blame her actually) They are decent canoes for scouts and the beatings don't bother the much and me even less. I think they weighed in close to the Alumacrafts we have, are quieter, pretty stable, and quiet. Good kid BW canoes.
Green is my favorite, Red I have no issues with unless you see those old faded red Coleman Canoes that are almost pink from laying out in the sun....
But Blue...nope... But they must have a loyal following out there.....somewhere...
Round #4 of Chemo was today. Along with they usual is 16 mg of Dexamethasone IV today, I have to take 8 mg orally tomorrow, and 16 mg for 2 days afterward. That is more than I gave a dairy cow... One major side effect is what it will do to my sleep patterns for the next few days....The good thing with the dex is it helps the nausea issues assosciated with chemo which I have no problems with...and don't want to either.

BEAUTIFUL boat on a BEAUTIFUL river, I love the Wisconsin River! I have a friend who lives near the Wisconsin and owns a blue Ariel:

You have to start them young to handle the speed of a red solo canoe.

10 minutes later he becomes and expert and starts showing off to his friends.
And then he flips it as predicted by all the Dads on shore.

A Texas Game Warden came by in a powerboat and was going to "rescue" him until all the Dads on shore waived him off. Swimming the canoe ashore was part of the learning experience.

I have a red canoe the only reason I have it was the price was so low I couldn't pass it up.

Other wise I would never own a red one.

It is made of poly-link tough as heck. Just the thing to beat up and own rocky rivers.

Being a hard core hunter trapper fisherman red just sticks out way to much.

Maybe I am overstepping my bounds as a new member here but I recently bought a bright red Wenonah Spirit II and I just love how sharp it is.

I think it depends on the paddler. It is longer than my green canoe though, so maybe it is faster too.

Northstar ADK solo, on the lake by my house ready for my weekly 6 am Saturday morning date. Any canoe is faster when you're paddling through glass like that!

"Overstepping my bounds" you say? NO WAY, WELCOME! Just so happens, both of my canoes are red currently, my Wenonah Prospector and Nova Craft Pal. The Pal picture was shot yesterday.

I'm a big fan of red boats, and they have always outnumbered my other colored canoes at probably a 3 to 1 ratio.
Faster? Maybe? I don't know; don't care, never raced, never will.
Enclosed photo represents maybe 20% of the red boats I've owned at one time or another.
Have noticed that when one red canoe departs; it is not long before another one shows up. Also have a red car, and a red motorcyle...............

I guess I can attest to that. When I took my red one out on Tuesday and Wednesday we only caught one fish. We seemed to catch a lot more in the old green canoe. "

I don't know, some predators of fish have red eyes like Smallmouths and Loons?
