Not casting any stones, but I do very often wonder how some of these people are even smart enough to find their way to the BWCA in the first place???

Brings back fond memories of entering a 40 acres tract of forest surrounded on three sides by roads and one by Lake Michigan, at night, no flashlight, heading home from a party. But I had been through that tract hundreds of times, even at night with out a light! There was a clear trail. Many hours later I emerged, bloody and ragged. The event had something to do with Tequila I believe. No rescuers though. I would have slept out there before I'd think of hollering for help. I went back the next day and managed to track my route through the mud and leaf litter. I had been 10 feet from a road several times. I probably walked and crawled more than a mile and a half in that forty acres.

I would never have done this on a wilderness trip. The night you get drunk is the night the family a bears would show up in your campsite!

I agree with the writer of the blog. Something doesn't add up. If he could hear his friends why couldn't his friends hear him? This seems to be a cover story. It would be nice to hear the truth.

What a ditch kit. Would't want to be there, but you still have to chuckle.

Flip flops and Fireball....hmmm.

You know, the way this year is going we may have to start assigning numbers to incident threads like this to keep them straight, just like we do for Name That Lake...

Apparently most of you doing the judging have never done anything stupid in your life!!!
I for one have done too many stupid things to get down one someone else, especially without knowing the whole story.

quote ellahallely: "Forest service beaver picked up a lost person on Romance Lake. He became separated from his "party" on Grandpa lake when he went ashore to go the bathroom in the woods. He spent the night in the woods and found his way to Romance lake, where he was spotted by the plane slashing in the water. The beaver was looking for him in an all out rescue effort.

He was wearing only shorts and flip flops. He also had a container containing liquor."
Sounds strange...do you have a link to that article?

At least we can infer that he went well back in the woods to poop. So, plus one for not polluting the water.

Hmmm........I try and be fairly tolerant and give some grace but seriously sometimes we just need to call a spade a spade. Sure we have all done some dopey things but that doesn't mean we can't make some judgements on actions. This definitely falls into the dumb-ass category. Hopefully a life changing lesson was imparted and our not so bright humanoid can change lanes.

The same label could be appropriately applied to myself. Going into WCPP........ knicked up with a knee that had been giving me trouble, getting dropped off via Red Lake Outfitter (no retreat option) and then overloading on a portage......all resulting in SAR helicopter flying me out.......and all without the excuse of alcohol.

2 day drive in, paid for shuttle and then paid for a floatplane to retrieve my canoe.......and then a 2 day drive back home all for 1 day of canoeing. Yup we all do stupid things but let's not be afraid to call them what they are.

For such is the wonderful skill, prescience of experience, and invincible confidence.

Really Flip flops, shorts and a bottle of booze!!! Truth is stranger than fiction. Obviously the bottle had a bit to do with his getting lost while taking a dump.

Sounds kind of odd. He got lost taking a dump in the woods and his group just left him???

Agreed. I can only speculate it was a drunk and/or high, "#### you guys, I'm going home!" moment that go serious.

Who knows? Stuff happens.

I was more interested in the Forest Service plane in this story. I've always wanted to see it up close but not like this. I have seen it flying over our group on one of our trips but that might not have even been a Forest Service float plane. de Havilland Beavers are beautiful planes (whether on floats or not). Piper Cubs are pretty cool too. I guess I just like bush planes. What are we talking about again? I'm sorry, but really I don't think that you need alcohol for a good time. Sometimes it might relax you a little but is it necessary?
