I am looking for some repair advice, pictures are from a SR. There is about a 1" rip in the material covering the float near bottom inside of the bow. The same area in the stern looks to have been repair with a bunch of epoxy? but no cloth? Thoughts to share please.

Looks like epoxy will do the job.

Yep, just some resin. Maybe a fiberglass or kevlar patch if you really feel its necessary but you should be ok with resin.

I've seen float tanks on SRs in rental liveries that get really ugly looking...

I have same problem in my SR Q17. I've discussed with Wayne at SR. He says this comes from people sitting on bow (or stern) to stabilize. Not accusing you, just reporting. SR cut two pieces of Kevlar for me. Following their instructions, I'm going cut out existing vertical face, scrape/cut/sand/shave/peel as much of the epoxy off as possible. They recommend I seal the perimeter of the styrafoam "triangle" that is the face of the flotation tank to the hull. It's more to reduce possibility of movement if that piece. I don't know if it shrinks or was undercut but that seems to be cause. Anyway, after that, epoxy, kevlar, epoxy.

I'm told it's very difficult to cut kevlar so i have precut pieces.

YMMV

Ran into the same situation. Decided to get that work done and have SR refinish my canoe in Atikokan over the past winter. Get ahold of Wayne at SR (807-597-1292) and he'll help you out.

I had a tear that looked almost exactly like that on our trip in June. I stopped by and talked to Joe at the Red Rock Wilderness Store and he told me the same thing others have mentioned here. He said it happens when someone sits on the bow or stern, I think ours may have happened in the 30 mph wind gust when the canoe went sailing across the rocks as we unloaded it at camp. However it happens a couple small strips of kevlar or even fiberglass and some resin and you'll be just fine.
