Like I said earlier many of the veg lakes have special regs-here is SQUASH LAKE
(Cook County) trout: catch-and-release only. Artificial lures and flies with a
single hook only. Use and possession of bait prohibited. Closed to winter fishing.
So check your regs.

I've driven by them, and I'm pretty sure Carrot Lake has the trout management sign mounted at the entry. I checked Lakefinder at some point, and I think it's stocked with Brook Trout. One of these days I'll make it over there.
What would you guys use if you were fishing a lake for Brook Trout?

Never been to those lakes, but I do love the names! I wonder how they came about also; same with the man chain and S chain in Q and the lady lakes in the BW.

The portages into Croc from the shoe lake road are in pretty good shape. I think they were cleared by a boy scout group a few years back, and the cleared them wide! There are trails into some of the other lakes, which are managed for trout and do have special regs.

I'm doing a September trip to Crocodile (EP66) and have been doing some research since reading a recent post about EP66 restrictions.
Hearing that the portages into Crocodile via the Veggie chain are in great shape is good news and has changed my mind on our entry route. Thanks for the info.
Given that day trips to other lakes with an EP66 permit is not allowed now, getting an early start through the Veggie lakes will give us an opportunity for fishing a couple different lakes on days 1 and 9.

some of them once and maybe still do have special restrictions on taking trout?

Yes, the Vegetable Chain has been talked about before, especially during the "entry to 66 with a 64 permit or vice versa controversy". From what I've read, it is a seldom used entry from that side and the portages can be iffy......but I have not seen them for myself.

We'll be up the trail for a few days soon. A veggie lakes daytrip is on the list of possible things to do. If we go there I'll report back on portages etc.

Very good area for seeing a Moose also , seems to be a lot of them in this area. They are trying to establish a trophy Brook trout population in some of these lake through catch and release.
