Seems like it would be groovy living up that way.......retired of course. And a place in Florida when I got sick of the cold. Ah, in a perfect world.

I'm glad things are working out well for you, Lundojam. When I left the Twin Cities 35 years ago at the age of 21, it was the best move I ever made. Even with a great income, urban/suburban life SUCKS-- but you don't realize it until you go back for a visit.

Wow, your last statement is so true. I could never go back. Lundojam, congratulations on the move.

I am loving it in Grand Marais. Looking at the Big Lake never gets old; every day it looks a little different, but always beautiful and dramatic.

I've been exploring the areas around the Gunflint and Sawbill Trails and finding some nice walleyes. Lots of overlooked little lakes that hold fish. Nice rainbows, too.

Work is abundant up here. If anybody is thinking about a move and isn't afraid to roll up the sleeves, I say go for it. If you are a day care provider you could write your own ticket. Tradesmen seem to be in short supply from what I've heard. Paraprofessionals in the schools are always needed as are substitute teachers. Housing is in demand, however, but there are plenty of SNF campgrounds in the area :) The community is welcoming. There are all kinds of people around here, so I think anyone would be able to find like-minded souls to hang around with.

What is really cool is getting up early in your own bed and being at the entry point 45 minutes later and ready to paddle.

Stop in and say Hi.

Much of the state there is a shortage of skilled construction workers or even people who want to do that type of work.

NO city has the world's best donuts. Only GM! Angry Trout is also world class and I love that red building with the clam chowder.

Funny, just last night my wife was saying for the thousandth time "I wish we'd moved to Grand Marais." We'd explored it often and a friend of ours actually DID. Just never could make a break for it, always had family pulling us here. Maybe after we retire?

Thanks, all.
MT- One of the cool things about GM is a person can get a fix of culture from time to time. Top notch food, thriving arts scene, etc. You can even spend $6 on coffee or a pint or an organic cucumber if you so choose;).

Northwoodsman-
It's a possibility. Certainly worth a phone call. Ask for Dr. DeWitt.
There is also an outfit called the Northland Learning Center that is a special education cooperative. They provide services to several districts.

lundojam......... great news and thanks for coming back to share with us.

My wife and I still talk about it once in a while. I'm just not adventurous enough and like my ducks in a row to sell the house and uproot the kids at ages 10 and 12. If I have another school year like the last two though......... I may "need" a move.

We will be staying up the Gunflint Trail soon for 6 days and I'm sure that will spark "the talks" again. ;)

Good to hear from you Lundo. I drove through Grand Marais last September and wondered how you were doing. Sounds like you are living the dream.

That's awesome Lundojam. Ever since I left Duluth for TX back in 1994 I have said that I would be retiring in Grand Marais. Perhaps I should make the change before I retire. My wife is a dyslexia therapist for the local school district, is there any need for those up there in the school system?

For now, my cabin is a frequent weekend destination and jumping off point for trips into Quetico, but I'll be joining you very soon. It would be great to connect.

Good for you, living the dream! I daydream about moving to NW Ontario, I'm obsessed with that area.

I worked a seasonal position on the north side of the cities several years back- not a great income so I really realized how much it sucks :)

I am in Grand Marais now. I have not been here in the summer in many years. It's very nice. When I visit in other seasons I don't recall seeing so many Herring and Ringbilled Gulls. It looks like it rained whitewash on the town. The Rooftop spikes and fake owls seem to attract them. The one in the photo is nesting in the spikes as the owl guards her. Their everywhere flying and resting on the ground. The noise from their calls is loud and when some ill informed person decides to feed them if becomes deafening. I like the seaside atmosphere they create. I have to go get a donut and decide for myself if they are the worlds best or not.
I'm glad it has worked out well for you Lundojam. I felt bad when you posted about getting rear ended on the way moving up there and a lot of stuff got wrecked.

It's a little more temperate than one might think, no colder than the Twin Cities.

That might be true if you are standing in Lake Superior, once you get a few thousand feet away from the lake there is a significant difference.
