The mayflies hatched last night in Stillwater at the town celebration along the river. People were walking into the middle of the swarm to film themselves. It was amazing to watch them get covered from head to toe. One young girl ran screaming out of the swarm then slipped on the pavement which is very slippery from the bugs. I got one in my mouth when it landed on my corndog.

Like blackflies the insects mean the water is clean and should be welcomed.

Probably a smoke plume from the reggae fest at bayfront park in Duluth.

We were getting smoke from out west. Very short lived.

From NWS in Duluth--
UPDATE: After further analysis and coordination with partner agencies, we believe this plume was the result of bugs of some kind.
--- original post below ---
We see this plume on our radar about 5 miles south of Zim on Highway 7 since about 115 pm. There has been law enforcement and fire departments driving through the area and see no smoke or fire. It is in the Sax Zim Bog area. We do not know what it is at this time but it has radar characteristics of a smoke plume. It does not act like chaff because it usually dissipates by now. If any one is in that area or has information, please send it to us. Thank you.

Cool mystery. I've heard of Mayfly hatches and other aquatic larvae emergences being caught on radar. Curious what was hatching then. Perhaps ask a fly fisherman; they are attune to what is flying and when.
