quote Canoearoo: "Did you check out the cave on the portage? I believe you are talking about an old Gold mine. It has been long abandoned but the waste of the people can still be seen in the woods. I talked to a local ranger about it and he said it is at least 100 years old. The old wood stove, barrel rings, pipes, pails scatter the woods.

Yup I told my youngest it was a gold mine and he became obsessed with looking for gold

Morning! That was me. I was in the stern with my brother-in-law and my nephew. I was introducing them both to the BWCA. That was a beautiful day.
We saw you all fishing and swimming and just didn't want to bother you all. Next time I guess.
Glad you had a great trip. The nephew did very well, I think he wants to come back.

Did you check out the cave on the portage? My oldest made a wood sign later that day so everyone would know to go look for it. We got tired of telling people about it but wanted to make sure they saw it. did you see the moose down the way, it was their earlier that morning

My bro-in-law hiked down the portage but didn't say anything about the cave. No moose either. Sounds like you had a good adventure!

We were camping on the north end of Kelly Lake and were swimming in a nice spot below the rapids and a BWCA.com canoe came by but never came close enough for me to say hi. You could have stayed and fished the tail of the rapids where we were swimming. The walleye were really biting this week. That was a great trip. :)
