I agree,
but I seen in the news more millennials generation age range are buying these big RV mobile homes andhuge camper trailers than any time in history for this age group. I just wonder where such a young group get the money?

I hope DNR builds some camper cabins there and develops cross country ski trails. If they do, reservations there would be a hard ticket to get in the winter.

That is getting more common with building hurts with a wood stove in them. Cuyunna in Crosby has two of them and they are booked solid.
Yes groom ski trails and some not would complement Ely's ski trails. Winter is the best.

There is plenty of room for all styles of camping, just stick to the kind you like best."
Savanna is a nice little park I visit in the fall and winter.

It was my first time there. My 4 year old daughter and I met my buddy and his 4 year old son there for a weekend of camping. We both agreed it was a really nice little park. I for sure plan on heading back, I want to explore that little trout lake they have.

I would love ski trails. They have the paved paths already, so they would have to get the groomers and to staff them, then they would have great skate skiing. The original description of the park said that there would be skate skiing, so lets hope!

Maybe it's just me (and a few other folks), but camping is not synonymous with electric hookups, wifi and modern shower facilities. Sure, there are different camping strokes for different kinds of camping folks, but I'd call this camping as much as I'd call the AWA wrestling.... some commonalities, but far from the real spirit of the thing. After hearing the report on MPR this morning, my wife and I made a decision that we will not be staying there.
Your mileage may vary, of course.

I just noticed that it is not staffed full time. Rather, someone comes around (once a day?) to check on things. How long, do you suppose, the $6/day for unlimited firewood will last?

I know, right. Most other state parks it is $6.00 a bundle.

I plan to bike there and always could go to Bearhead State park and camp. Also in time the camping areas will expand and more variety of sites will come available I assume.

Correct me if I am wrong, but along with the $31 per night camping fee there is also a reservation fee of 8.00 if done through the website or 10.00 if done over the phone. This adds to the cost as well. We still use and enjoy state parks but the cost does become a factor.

There is beauty in the dance where not everyone agrees! I look forward to seeing this park, but I would not camp there. Some like the wifi, some not! If everyone was like me, I would not want to be around very long...

I am planning on camping there the first night if I can. There are 11 campsites still available of the sites that are ready. I already drove in last week to check it out. The day use area is open, picnic grounds, but I got chased off the campgrounds so I didn't get to see what is open. Report will follow!

Looks like a great new park -- but $31 is a pretty hefty "camping fee".

I wonder if all sites are that high. Most of the state fees are like $15-23.
I think they went a little too modern for some and that is what others wanted:Campground users will find a facility unlike any built so far at a Minnesota state park. All 33 of the facility’s individual campsites come equipped with electricity and Wi-Fi, while the three large group camps come with screened picnic shelters. All of the campers will have access to modern shower and bathroom buildings, designed with a focus on energy efficiency and a light carbon footprint.

Group sites are $150-$300/night, significantly higher than any other park. Personally, I do not need/want wifi when I camp; I can get that at home. It is a park I will visit, but I would never pay those prices to stay at a State Park.

agree 100%,you go camping to get away. They did it for the younger crowd to get them outdoors.

Well stated Pinetree. If a family wanted a "camping" trip and had teens along who might be horrified at the prospect of not having their phone along it makes perfect sense. Of course these modern amenities come with a price.

With the current state park reservations system, having wi-fi at your campsite is a big help with scoping out your next move. Especially if you are traveling the North Shore parks up and down 61. Having spent a dozen or so consecutive June outings at Split Rock's cart-in sites, I can say that it is often a good thing to be connected. You either reserve the whole trip a year ahead and live with what seemed to be a good idea, or you live dangerously and scramble to locate good phone service to secure a reservation for each day as it comes.

Not only the park development but the bike trail connecting the campground to Soudan and Tower should be a nice bump for the economy of those towns.
We camp at Bearhead Lake State Park now and then and often wish there was a bike trail connected to the park.

Minnesota parks were weak on this type of camping. This is a good addition, for a family $31 is still a cheap option from a cabin rental. I tend to think this will be very popular. My sister and I went down to New Orleans last year for Mardi Gras, and all the parks down there were similar to this one, wifi and pull in RV type amenities.
