Let's not forget sniffles333 and his huge contribution to this doggy tale. He's a real hero here. The retrievers group is awesome as well. I'm glad it worked out so well.

What was her travel route. It sounds like it was rather long.

Glad she is back home. She may be stressed for a bit she has been through a lot.

quote Itchymenace: "Thank you everyone for your continued interest and support. Tonight Lindsey is sitting home on her couch and it feels like order has been restored to the universe.

The Retrievers are a truly amazing and dedicated organization. I can't say enough good things about them or thank them enough for the non stop effort they put into finding our dog.

What a trip report Lindsey could write indeed. Before yesterday, the last sighting I heard was from a gentleman who saw her running across the highway while being chased by a wolf. I thought it was all over. I'd love to know how she survived that one and then materialized unscathed 10 miles away the next day. Apparently this dog is a lot smarter than I give her credit for.

She lost about 1/4 of her body weight and is being treated for Lyme's but her loveable personality seems unchanged. She sat in my daughter's lap the whole drive from Ely to Minneapolis.

Thank you again to all the good people on this board and the citizens of Ely.

John "

ItchyMenace,

So very glad to see your family picture with your canine family member back where she belongs! And glad to see your words of thanks for all the good people who helped, and all of the ones on here who cared. This can be a board with some conflicts from time to time, but it is made up of lots of folks with good hearts. Maybe you will want to be more of a part of our "family" from now on.
I hope so.

Great news about Lindsey!

When I heard the dog was lost in the woods, I honestly considered taking a trip up to the area. What a great excuse for a trip!

When I found out the dog escaped again my only thought was, "Sorry Lindsey, but this one's on you. Tough nuggets, dog."

I realize this isn't my best moment. Nevertheless, I'm glad the dog is caught. I hope it stays caught.

So glad Lindsey has been caught.

I definitely agree with that Retrievers article. We have an incredibly shy indoor cat. Once she got out for a few hours and never showed sign of herself as we searched the yard and called. Once we spotted her hidden in a bush, by getting a reflection off her very dark black coat with a powerful flashlight, my wife sat down on the ground nearby and a few minutes later the cat walked over and lay down in her lap.

What a relief to know that Lindsey has been caught and can finally settle down to shut down the "Lizard Brain" (that was a good article from the Retrievers). Thank you Ely and all the folks who got this dog off the streets before the weather goes down hill.

Yep. I agree.

Also, my dog is a jerk and thinks it's play/chase time.

I've found that when she gets out, the best method to get her back is to get the treat bag and shake it. She knows the sound and that usually breaks through whatever else is controlling her brain and she comes running as fast as she can.

Might try calling Ely radio WELY 218-365-4444 or Ely Veterinary Clinic 218-365-5911. Try giving them a heads up to look for your dog. Ely radio most likely would share your story on the air and have people looking for your dog. Maybe the Ely Police dept. also, or 5 O as they say now.

Wow. This is a good point to bring up, since if the O P isn't used to small towns they may not be prepared for this. (Our vet is in a town of 30,000 and is always open on Saturday, so it surprised me at first reading.)

Thanks Blatz! We were at the mile long portage at Upper Basswood when she bolted. She was seen twice while we were there and ran. Not sure why she was so skittish but hopefully a week of being alone have sobered her into wanting to come home.

Just got a request to see if anyone who happens to be in the Ely area would be willing to donate some more dog food & drop off here so they could pick it up & use it for the rescue attempts.

I figure this must be a good sign since they seem to have put up trail cameras so must see Lindsey eating the food. (not sure, but ....)

Anyone who is in this area and wants to drop off food, just let me know. Our hours are shorter but you can email me or call our number (218 365 3251) and leave a message. We'll see about having someone around to accept the donations.

I have been lurking watching this story unfold and then fold again. At first thinking that the dog was doomed in the wild and then marveling that she was found in the wilds only to be lost in the city. Now she is a stray in the city with no recent sightings.

I guess, if she was my dog, I would have a poster pasted to every power pole in Ely and in every establishment that would allow. I think I would also drive the roads looking for an injured dog. This dog has got to be around. Someone outside of our "canoe click" must have seen it.

I sure hope this story has a happy ending.

Yes, I hope the pooch is found safe - there just does not seem to be any sort of coordinated effort to ensure that will happen - nothing I can do as I sit her 1000 miles away and I'm sure the owners are feeling helpless as well - how can this community, especially and obviously the Ely folk along with the owner, make a concerted effort to find this dog -

I'd be willing to print up some of the same flyers that were first put up on the FB page.

I have an inkjet printer, but I think that maybe if I put a few bands of wide clear tape over them, it should keep for a while.

Will have to do when I get back to town tomorrow, my printer at home does not have color ink.

Anyone from Ely know if it is okay with the PD and City of Ely to put up posters and if there are rules, where is okay?

I can help distribute flyers around town. I need to run to Virginia tomorrow but will try & stop by VNO later this afternoon or when I get back in town tomorrow. I don't know if local ordinances allow posting flyers on public property but I am sure some local businesses would allow it, if we ask them. Don't give up hope and keep searching! A dog survived 42 days on her own in Yellowstone two years ago after she and her family were involved in an auto accident.

It sounds like all the sightings have been in one area. Maybe that is the place to concentrate. It would be so nice if the owner would chime in with any updates. I'm sure he is overwhelmed by the whole situation but he has a lot of people willing to help if he could provide any additional direction.

Depends on the dog, but in general, the longer it is on the run the more skittish and fearful it will be. So it is in the better interest of the dog if it were caught sooner rather than later. It sounds like it was already skittish to begin with.

If it is known to be in a particular area it would be nice to have a k9 live trap placed there with some food and water to catch it as it will most likely run if otherwise approached.

You could contact the Humane Society in Virginia MN and I'll bet they could help.

Maybe you could borrow a trap from the Wolf Center.

Thank you everyone for your continued interest, support and suggestions. It blows my mind that people want to help in all these different ways like making flyers and searching.

I live in Minneapolis. I have three kids and two jobs. I wish I were able to get up to Ely to actively search. I'm hoping next week I will be able too.

In the mean time, I keep hoping that my phone will ring and someone will have captured her. Her behavior is confusing. Lindsey was a very warm and friendly family pet who would always put her head on my lap when I sat on the couch. It's hard to believe that she wouldn't wander up to the first person who notices her.

If there is anything I can do to help to coordinate, I'm happy to do it. And I will certainly reimburse people for flyers.

Thank you again.

We have driven around the area where she initially escaped in Ely on several occasions but haven't seen her. I haven't seen much in the way of updates on social media nor have I heard of any kind of organized effort to find her or set up a feeding station. Other than the possible sighting reported here by VNO a couple of days ago, I'm not finding much information and no specific locations of sightings. You might want to keep posting on Ely Area Swap and Sell, Ely Area Pet Lovers Group, Ely Area Lost and Found Pets pages on FB, as well as here. I will keep looking, and hope others up here will too.

Thanks for helping and offering to put up flyers. If the city frowns on this type of thing then maybe the local business owners may be willing to post something in their establishment's.

We have a dog in rescue that was on the run in Iowa City for quite some time. It took three weeks before they were able to trap her. She is now with our group. She was brought to us scared and almost completely shut down. But the point is that she was found so hopefully this dog will be as well.

Another idea is to contact the closest humane society to get a k9 live trap.

Once she us located you could place the trap close to her location with some food in it to catch her. Have used this method b4 to catch dogs that don't want to conform to the norms of society. It sounds cruel but no harm comes to the dog. It's kinda like a big kennel.

Of course being up north this method might also catch something else.

LOL, this is just ridiculous.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m Ben (referenced from Itchymenace’s (John’s) post earlier) and saw that the dog was missing in the Basswood Falls area prior to our entry date of Saturday, September 30th. My father, 19 month old English lab Roscoe, and I stayed at Hanson’s Island in the no motor zone of Basswood from the 30th through yesterday (quick thanks to TGO and John from Voyageur North for the minnows and leeches).
On Monday around noon, I was cutting up some ham for lunch at our camp when a dog came from out of the woods. Instantly I recognized the dog, thanks to this great forum, and we couldn’t believe she could be on the island. We never planned on being in the falls area, but had discussed on the drive up what we’d do if we were to actually see the dog. She had been alone in the area for over a week (assuming), and was not wearing the lifejacket as pictured by John in the initial post. We were planning on leaving on Sunday, October 8th so we were hoping to see others going out to bring the dog in, or to at least contact the owner (which we assumed was named Lindsey based on the full name on the dog’s collar, not the dog’s name itself). She was a bit hesitant to come into camp but you could tell she was desperate for food and really worn down. Her collar was extremely loose and she was thin as a rail. Luckily, we had plenty of dog food and biscuits (Roscoe doesn’t eat it anyways, he’s more of a steak and licorice kind of guy) so we got her a full belly and into a sleeping bag to warm up and rest. We decided to name her Lucy for the week we spent with her for multiple reasons (one of which involved plenty of paper towels at 4 am and expletives, but I don’t recall Knucklehead being mentioned). While she stayed in the tent, we went out fishing and ran across Harrison’s (hbowden) group. They weren’t able to take her back out as they had a full load, but I’d like to thank them for contacting John to inform him that we had the dog.

Lucy and Roscoe didn’t get along very well so the tent situation for the week was interesting to say the least. We rigged up a tarp vertically down the middle to split the tent in two and each guy slept with one of the dogs while keeping distance between the other. Harrison’s group was the only group that we saw all week, and we were fortunate to have plenty of food/fish to continue our trip until yesterday. By Thursday, she seemed to be getting back to normal and gained a little bit of weight/energy back. Each day when we went fishing we had to leave her in the tent as there was no chance the two dogs would be friends in an empty canoe. At no time was Lucy free from her lead at camp (picture of her from last week included as well as Roscoe and I).

After a series of eventful portages and getting back to the Fall Lake landing yesterday afternoon with a full canoe, I was able to touch base with John to report that we still had the dog. We dropped her off at Voyageur North yesterday afternoon as someone from VNO was kind enough to keep the dog overnight and we didn’t have any room in our vehicle. It’s unfortunate to hear that she’s on the loose again in Ely, and hope that she’s safely found soon. What is absolutely amazing about all of this is how she got onto Hanson’s Island from Basswood Falls. She either crossed into Canada by the falls and walked the shoreline to the east 2-3 miles and then swam across two stretches of water with an island in between to Hanson’s (with or possibly without a life jacket), or another group had found her and brought her to Hanson’s but lost her while camping on the island. Based on her history as an escape artist, I’d imagine the latter is more likely. It would be great to hear a happy outcome out of all of this. Lucy’s saga continues…

Excellent, and a good story to boot. Sounds like somebody used their ears and swam across. Resilient.

If it were me, I'd lavish untold riches upon the rescuers. Is Hanson Island Day trippable? If so, a six pack of properly packaged beer, a box of wine, or chocolate might be a treasure for folks who've been out for a week.

I'd love to hear the full accounting if you ever talk to the folks.

Hanson's Island is less then 2 miles from US Point. You can drive a motor boat to US Point. I bet if you called LaTourell's (they run Prairie Portage) they could get word out to the people on Hanson's Island. They might even be able to find a way back for your dog. Their number is 1-800-365-4531.

You can't drive a motorboat to US Point, only to about Washington Island from the east side.
You can only drive a motorboat to the narrows before the water marker (Squaw Narrows???) on the west side which will bring you fairly close (3-4 miles??) to Hanson's Island.

I sure hope that this all comes together for you. This is awesome news!

I have 3 dogs and 2 of them are really scared by thunder, fireworks, and etc. I purchased a Thunder Shirt for the one who was the most scared and it really worked well. I bought a second one for dog #2 and once again it worked wonders. Although #3 wasn't scared, he felt left out when I put one on the other two. I would grab them and he would jump into my lap and start wagging his tail so I bought one for him also. They are around $50 each but are so worth it. I just hated to see my dogs hiding under the table or desk shaking. Now when it storms I don't have dogs trying to burrow under the covers in bed or trying to jump in my lap while I'm working in my home office. The sizing is hard to judge so I would recommend buying then locally so you can easily exchange them if necessary,

I was up there around the same time- where you all out in a canoe yelling as if looking for someone?? My sister and I were on Pipestone on the 14th, we had one hell of a thunderstorm that evening. Between storms, there were a couple kids in a canoe hollering for someone..we couldn't make it out. I went down to the shore to make sure they were okay...but they had gone by then. Hope you find her, I would be just sick if something happened to my little girl (dog). Someone is bound to find her between the canoeists and moose hunters out there.

Hope you are soon rejoined with, (Lindsey but she answers to "dog" , "doggo" and "knucklehead"). Sounds about like my dog.

Question for you Itchy, were you doing a day trip at entry point 50 on August 20th?"

Nope, that wasn't me August 20.

I wonder if the dog would respond to a loud whistle like a police whistle? Set up camp and every hour or so give a few blasts and call its name. Not so many folks around this time of year to disturb. A dog can hear a whistle a very long way.

The pup's name might be useful.

Keep your spirits up. Dogs are more resilient than we often imagine. My sister's dog bolted out of a yard once, was found 20 miles away three weeks later.

I heard lost items mentioned on WELY last time I was up, perhaps worth a try?

I hope you get good news soon. One of our friends know someone who had a dog get lost in the BW. It was found a few weeks later, quite far away. It was probably getting food from people it found but not allowing itself to be kept. It may have even been getting canoe rides with people and then running away from them. It was also late in the season like this. So, keep the faith and spread the word any way you can.

Good suggestions just above on how to get word out.

Great news! Your dog must have had an incredible journey!

It reminds me of a Saturday Matinee Movie I saw at the Theatre in 1963 called "The Incredible Journey".
It was about two dogs and a cat who despite all odds found their way home. As a six year I cried when it appeared that the old Bull Terrier named Bodger had perished until he was seen slogging across a field near home well behind the others.

Great story about Despair, Hope, Kindness of strangers, canine cunning and survival and Jubilation. The local papers I bet would find it interesting.

I'm happy for you and your family Itchy.

When you get her back I would suggest two things.

1. Consult with a K9 behaviorist/trainer. It sounds like she may need some help with recall and bolting. As well as fear.
2. They make collars that have GPS locators built into them. With the appropriate cell phone app you can find her much easier.

Good luck, I hope she is found safe and returned to you.

They said the dog had the yellow life jacket, we did not see the dog as we were canoeing. The campers told us that they fed your dog and that it was sleeping in their tent and they were out looking for rangers or campers and that we were the first people they saw in 3 days. They will be on Hanson Island until Saturday and unfortunately we screwed up and didn't exchange numbers so there isn't a way to contact them, sorry. But they said there bringing it to the Vet in Ely on Saturday. And they should be on this form Saturday when there out of the BWCA.

Thanks Blatz! We were at the mile long portage at Upper Basswood when she bolted. She was seen twice while we were there and ran. Not sure why she was so skittish but hopefully a week of being alone have sobered her into wanting to come home.

Last spot she was seen was the campsite on Basswood just before the portage."

Like in October 2008 or 2010 a dog got lost on Isabella lake after a canoe tipped over early October. Everybody got to shore safe. I was at the parking lot and USFS personnel on their own time volunteered along with a Outfitter out of Ely. That dog too was seen a day or two later and was skitish(sp) and ran away when approached. I believe that Ely outfitter went back again another day and coaxed the dog in at the same campsite on Isabella lake.

That couple were on like a week long trip and was finishing up and about 1 mile plus from the Isabella landing when they tipped over in very strong winds along the east shore.

An old trick that works with coon hounds is to leave your shirt or jacket, something with your scent, where you last saw the dog, and chances are good they will be there waiting for you in the morning.

Indeed a well known trick amongst the coon hunting crowd.........that is unless your dog goes deep and won't leave if he's treed!! My dog was big and very high powered and wouldn't stop until he cut a coon track. On a quiet night you could hear him open for at least 1 mile away (across a section). On the night where I lost him for a week I had to take someone home after we had waited and searched 1/2 the night. I left my coat, drove and dropped my buddy off and drove back hoping the dog would be there. No dice. When morning broke, opening day of deer season, I started to hear the gunshots and figured the worst.

I spent 7 days, all day everyday, looking for him and asking around. A few people had seen him far away from where we had let loose. Eventually I got it into my head to get a map and put a dot where we had let loose, more dots at where he had been seen, and lastly a dot at home. Then see if the direction matched up. If he was heading home I could call at all the places the line passed through. On my way to get a map to implement the idea he comes trotting out in front of my truck from behind a guardrail while driving into a Holiday Inn parking lot some 20+ miles away. Miracle? Yea, I sort of think so.

Keep the faith!!

Any chance you can do a return trip? Aside from a sense of smell, dogs also are great at distinguishing voices. She may return to the sound of your voice.

Another thought, what is your dog's name? A skittish dog is more likely to approach or come to a stranger that may call her by name. Maybe the BWCA community can help.

Good luck, thoughts are with you.

I always bring my dog on backcountry trips--often for weeks at a time. Most bigger dogs are resilient, and tougher than you think. They can long outlast a human when food runs out. I think that there is a very good chance of recovering the dog in good shape.

I sympathize with your plight. God is good and praying is the difference maker. I lost my best friend and hunting dog the night before the opening of deer season many moons ago. I sort of figured he might get blasted as a "deer runner". But I kept praying and spent 7 days searching for him. Finally, over 20 miles away, he comes trotting out in front of my truck from behind a guardrail almost unrecognizable. I cried like a baby.

Keep your hopes up, do not confess or utter negative "what ifs" but believe and confess that your dog will be restored to you.

Keep the faith, strange things happen.
Many years ago, my brother and sister in law owned the Chain Saw Sisters Saloon, and had several dogs: One being a large black and white part St. Bernard critter, named Otis.
He disappeared one day, apparently following some canoe party that left, and never came back.
A few weeks later, Michelle (owner of the Chain Saw Sisters) was in the Zup's parking lot when a dog started barking from the window of a car.
It was Otis, the owners of the vehicle had found him cruising the shore of Crooked Lake, and he climbed into their canoe.
Long story short, Otis was returned after taking the long way back home!! :)

Don't lose hope. Last year a dog went over Rebbeca  Falls and the owners thought it had died. Word was put out to look for the dogs body. 10 days Roger Skraba guide and former Ely Mayor found the dog alive. Has was camped on Hilly Island on Lac LaCroix and the dog walked into camp.
