What do you all do about insuring your canoes? The Northstar I just ordered cost more than some motor vehicles I've owned, so it made me think of it. Presumably it's covered by homeowners insurance while stored, and by auto insurance while in transit, but are those policies going to adequately cover against loss? And what about if I wrap it around a rock? Does anything cover that? Or do y'all just not worry about it?

A rider on home owners might get more coverage. a new canoe might be over the personal property limit. Ask your agent!

I bought extra insurance for 2 of my canoes. 1941 Oldtown, and one of my Souris River. I think it cost me an extra 30 bucks a year for the both of them. Just wanted the extra coverage to replace them both if needed.

I have State Farm Insurance and almost positive it is not covered by my car insurance. I asked them a couple of times. Years ago-like 20 years ago I insured my canoe at that time for like $19 and it covered damage even while canoeing on the water. Carried it for 2 years and dropped it.

I also totaled my Ford Ranger when I rolled it on a overpass 30 years ago in North Dakota ion a icy Bismarck ramp. with my aluma craft canoe on top. Insurance paid nothing for damage(did take it home-a little welding and hammer pounding made it useable again).

flytyer: "As a retired insurance agent, add it to your homeowners policy with a special sports equipment rider. Very inexpensive."

The cost of the rider is inexpensive but do you have to satisfy the deductible on the policy?

A buddy just had his garage burn down last summer. He had an older wood canoe of some sort in the garage. He mentioned that they gave him depreciated value for the canoe which according to the insurance company was around $700 but he was able to go out and buy a new replacement canoe and with proper receipts to prove replacement cost he was able to get the additional costs reimbursed by the insurance company.

Never much thought about it. But my canoes are so old now I guess it really doesn't matter.

I had never given it any thought until I had a buddy that had a canoe get wrecked on top of a vehicle and it was not covered by insurance. It cost me $17 a year to add it to my insurance for a SR Q18.5.
