And here Scientific American weighs in. Bears have to move to find food, but movement burns calories. So, on some level, I'm assuming that a bear has to be strategic in acquiring calories. Bears aren't going to ascend 10,000 feet to procure a single grub, which brings me back to islands. I'm guessing a bear would prefer to cross a lake at a strait. I once rented a cabin and prior renters had written about their weeks in a log book. There were several bear sightings, all of bears crossing or about to cross a strait, the narrowest part of that lake. Given bears' intellect, it seems possible that they wouldn't swim out to an island for the heck of it. Winter is coming. Energy must be store housed. Now, if there an island in a strait, then, "Yeah, it's swim time!" Again, I could be anthropomorphizing, but brain furrows are a corporeal thing, a horsepower-increasing folding rather than a figment of the mind. |

The second link/attack happened in the Madison Mtns in Montana. That mtn range is among the most beautiful I have ever seen and is on my backpacking bucket list. Some locals I talked to while on a fire said they will never go into that range due to all the Grizzleys. |

Grizzlies attack if they are protecting their young, protecting a "kill" or looking to prey upon a person. The key is being able to discern the reason for the attack. If they are protecting young or a kill you must play dead. They will continue until you are no longer moving. But to play dead with a predatory bear is to serve yourself up. An interesting grizzly story is of a middle aged couple who came up suddenly on a Grizzly on a trail. The bear attacked the man and basically ripped his scalp off and was in the process of dragging him off when the woman decided she did not want to live without her spouse and challenged the bear. The bear dropped the man and went for her. The only thing she had was a pair of binoculars and she remembered what her dad had always taught her........that an animals nose was its sensitive spot. She whirled the binoculars via the strap and brought them down right on the bruins snout. It stopped and she did it again and the bear decided that was enough and it left. An incredible act of bravery. Some other hikers came along and ran to get help. The man was airlifted out and survived. She told the story in her own words and it brought tears to my eyes. |

quote mastertangler: "Just commenting on how media manipulates is all......" Oddly enough, I agree with MT on the media. Its very evident. If it is wrong to treat someone differently because of race, sexual orientation, gender etc, it is wrong across the board. There just isn't any balance. The straight white old guy is always the dope in any commercial. I don't think it is an attempt to marginalize the white guy, I just think they are scared of the active special interests. |

quote mastertangler: "Just commenting on how media manipulates is all.......I have not seen the movie but the man was shown to be an idiot according to another poster. I am culturally aware and get around more than the average bear and deal with people from all walks of life probably more so than anyone I personally know. Reversing the male/female role expresses an idea that you're not comfortable with, the woman as the primary decision maker, the emotional rock, the bread winner. It's not that way in my house (we're more "traditional" in that sense) but I personally know of plenty of households where the wife takes on those roles or it's at least very equal. And, wait for it...they're very happy people! Have those men just become emasculated from liberal media or is real life a bit more complex than what's on the ol' boob tube? Hollywood makes movies to make money. Advertisers target specific audiences to drive sales. What white males like myself should realize is that there is now an avalanche of media being created that does not have me in mind as the target demographic. It's not all for me anymore. More voices, more dollars. And yes, those historically marginalized voices that are now getting center stage can make things uncomfortable if you prefer the status quo. MT, I believe you are a thoughtful and free thinking problem solver and you have a strong voice that is able to shape opinion. A leader no doubt. I know you enjoy a healthy intellectual exchange of ideas so when you have opportunities, ask those Jews, Mulsims and Blacks what they think of the current cultural movement to diminish white males? Ask a gay person why all of the sudden they are nothing but cool? Ask some women how they feel about movies with a woman hero? |

quote mastertangler: "quote Lotw: I agree these advertising schemes are trendy. Case in point, seen one recently; ad for some type of "better" TV package. "A cable TV technician at the home of couple during the day, the wife having made a wise choice regarding the product, husband standing around in bathrobe, pink tee and pajama pants." The "message" I get is, husband needs to get a life, wife needs to get a new husband, cable company just suckered another consumer. |

While I am tolerant and open minded about individual liberty on a personal basis, I believe it will be to our detriment on a societal level to destroy the fundamental building block of society.......the family, with the male generally assuming a leadership position. What that means will of course be misinterpreted and twisted into something unrecognizable but such is the culture these days. As per so called "white privilege" I am disgusted by the term and find it racist and bigoted. Perhaps I never got the memo about privilege as I scrapped, hustled and worked my rear end off to get where I am and am still working 12 hour days with no end in sight. I get that some folks are born on 3rd base and others don't even have a bat but it has little to do with race and in the long run it has almost nothing to do with where you end up (at least in this free market capitalist society). Lots of wealthy folks lose everything and lots of poor people rise to unimaginable heights due to intelligence and hard work. A sensitive subject which I hadn't expected to evolve in this manner but I applaud all for tone and tenor. After all, cold weather is upon us and stirring the pot on occasion is not nessassarily a bad thing. I will be spending Thanksgiving alone so perhaps I will check out the movie. It reminds me of the couple on an island in Algonquin park near one of the entry points who were both killed via a black bear their first night while making the evening dinner. That bear was subsequently destroyed. |

quote missmolly: " What generally works... Those are great reads, Molly. thank you. Even considering the remote odds, I'm now thinking bear spray is a good companion on any trip. I've encountered bears up north on 3 separate occasions and could have benefited by having some at least once. BTW, isn't it illegal to cross into Canada with bear spray? Thanks again. |

quote OneMatch: "quote missmolly: " What generally works... As long as your canister has a bear face on it or is otherwise marked as bear spray, it isn't. Bear spray is about one tenth the strength of the spray used on people. It's the latter that's not allowed due to its potency. The border agent will ask you if your spray is diluted for bears and I always have mine by my side in case they want to verify it, but they've never asked to examine it. Glad you clicked on the three links. I sometimes wonder if my linking is a waste of time. BTW, I've paddled in the Chapleau region for months of my life and when I read about the doc being killed by the bear, it personally resonated with me. |

As for masterangler's thoughts on media/Hollywood bias, he has a point; it's pretty obvious quite often. As a Christian, white male, I would be portrayed as the devil incarnate if my biography were to become a "Lifetime" movie! |

They made that guy ( all guys I think) our to be a real idiot. The girl was awesome. (I kind of wanted to marry her myself) Basically the only part of the story based in reality was that someone got killed by a bear. |

quote Lotw: "Here’s what I didn’t like. It seems to be the politically correct thing to do these days........you see it in our media culture, the clergy are child molesters, the cops are corrupt, the gay guy is always the noble cool guy, the kids are way smarter than their parents and the white guy is basically an effimante idiot. Watch your average commercial these days, the woman typically has leadership. Just notice, that's all I ask before I get trashed. Nothing wrong with strong women. I'm married to one. But the prevailing tilt is to diminish the male. |
||
Jocobo81 |
quote mastertangler: "quote Lotw: "Here’s what I didn’t like. Certainly don’t want to turn this into a political thing but wow, you certainly have some outdated ideas on life. That man you pulled aside wouldn’t have any more ability to defend against a bear than the female. Strength isn’t a factor against a grizzly. If I was that guy I would have considered you a masochist. Your media reference above is so terribly cliched, poor white men...(I am one myself btw). Oh and your lumping gay men in there speaks volumes to your leanings. Sad sentiments altogether. But the movie was great. |
||
mastertangler |
If you don't think there is a cultural movement to diminish males, particularly white males, then you aren't particularly observant. As per gay roles in movies show me where they have been portrayed even once as someone less than noble, smart and cool? To make the observation does not make me anti gay, I do work for them rather often, as I do for Jews, blacks and Muslim Americans. So you can twist and accuse all you want. Next time you watch a TV commercial where a man and woman are doing any business transaction observe who the leader is. The man is following dutifully behind. Just an observation of the way media is manipulating society is all. |

I am culturally aware and get around more than the average bear and deal with people from all walks of life probably more so than anyone I personally know. Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure the white American male is going to be okay. I know some men are annoyed that looking u to Don Draper isn’t okay anymore, but I’m sure they’ll get over it after holding their wife’s purse a couple of times. |

I wrote paragraphs - but deleted them. Just stands to say - White male privilege is alive and well in America. |

quote Grandma L: "Thanks, Jocobo81! I'm all for a spirited debate of ideas, but just because someone has ideas you disagree with or are old fashioned doesn't make them evil, and frankly resorting to name calling, mocking, and shaming is a pretty low move. Its dismissive and degrading. I find it hard to believe that whipping out a gem like 'White Male Privilege" is not designed to shutdown debate and shame. Then again, if I've learned anything, those who proport to have modern ideals that value diversity and would never support bullying, are happy, even gleeful, to bully and diminish those who have unpopular opinions they find out of step. It's far easier than actual engagement. |

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen the film and plan to, don't read further. This incident happened in 2005 and the real story, the wife was killed by a predatory black bear. The husband survived. At the time of the following article, authorities were searching for the bear. Most of the rest of the film was fiction. You can more here: The real story behind the movie Backcountry |

quote missmolly: " What generally works... I had never heard that grizzly bears probably don't think of people as food but black bears might. The article says one should fight back if attacked by a black bear (don't play dead). That might be good advice. I really don't know. How do the rest of you folks feel about the advice to "fight back". To be honest, I've wondered if I'd have the calm needed to play dead. |

quote SourisMan: "quote missmolly: " What generally works... As I understand it, you fight a predatory male and go fetal with a defensive female. A bear can only sustain so much damage because they don't have a stocked fridge and healthcare coverage. |

I believe bear spray cans have a shelf life of two years, but I couldn't find it written on the can I have at home. |

Did anybody see this?? It sent a powerful message to men dragging their girlfriends into the wilderness! |

I gave a young guy a hard time when he rolled into a campground in Glacier, girlfriend in tow, just as quiet as a mouse. I pulled him aside and in no uncertain terms laid down the law that the young ladies health and welfare was his responsibility and he better be making some noise as they travel. Smart kid as he took my advice. I saw them the next day and he was using his whistle. Not so sure I will watch the movie though. I already think about bears enough as it is. And certainly wouldn't watch it with my wife. She gets concerned as it is. |

I lost much of my fear of bears after 3 years living in one of the heavier concentrations of Grizzley Bears of Alaska. I also gained much more respect for them and learned a great deal more about their behavior and what to do if I encountered one. I saw over 30 bears last summer and I was trying to avoid them. jwartman, where was that pic taken, and who is working on that hide? Hunter roughed up by a bear in Canada |
