Seven ways to make your battery's last longer

The only thing I could see on the storage issue in the article was to keep them stored in a cool, dry place.

Yes, I googled it and can not find anything about storing them upright.

I’ve been told that they will keep power longer if stored vertically. Does not apply to lithium polymer.

larger prescription bottles work for me.

Never heard that before, what is the logic behind that one?

I think it's pretty unlikely that your batteries discharged in a ziplock from shorting. If somehow they shorted out, you'd know it. They get pretty hot. I accidentally put an AA battery in backwards once in a four battery holder, and it melted the battery holder and toasted the battery too.

The retail display cards holding batteries are usually a disappointing lot for reusable storage, but once in a while you come across packaging -- i.e. for 4 AA -- where the paperboard is sealed around clear plastic that has a reclosable clamshell-type design. (Energizer Ultimate Lithium are often packaged this way.) Even though they sort of hold shut without it, I'll close them with a small bit of tape (folding back a small tab to make it easily reusable). Nice protection in the ditty bag. And free. I have 4-5 of these empty battery "cases" mixed in among the fresh supply, and it drives my wife a bit nuts.

If you are using the rechargeable batteries they will drain some just sitting on the shelf. I've noticed it on my rechargeable batteries.

I use prescription bottles without labels. They are fairly waterproof, you can see what is inside, the smaller ones are good for AAA and the slightly larger ones for AA."
+AA" -AA Just wanted to close the loop."
That's a good one......

On occasion I worked as a tour guide for groups of home builders visiting our factory. Because of the noise guests would use equipment made up of headphones and microphones that were powered by 9 volt batteries. I kept a few spare batteries in the front pocket of my dress pants in case of failure during the tour. The new batteries had plastic protective covers across the terminals. Sometimes though I grabbed batteries that were half discharged and had no protective strip. It was one of uncovered batteries that came in contact with a coin in my pocket and gave me a Hot Rod. The visitors thought it was hilarious and it's probably the only thing they remember about the tour.

I always put my extra batteries in a zip lock bag and usually o'kay, but once in a while batteries seem kind of drained. I wonder if batteries can discharge if positive- negative terminals meet? I should of known this answer 50 years ago. Never too late for a old dog to learn new tricks. Right?

I use these. I really like them and have several different sizes and they also make a good little Christmas present.

I recently attended a presentation on Wilderness Travel and safety given by the Manager of Yosemite Search and Rescue. His advice on where to carry your spare headlamp batteries is in your spare headlamp.
