stoopid idea; stoopid video.

Only in America could an immigrant from Africa make billions and do something like this. Normally they use concrete blocks to simulate a load, this shows some creativity while testing the new heavy lift rocket. With all the crap going on in the world right now what is not to cheer?

I think the whole thing is wonderful. Gives me hope for the future. Of course I am a space junkie so I've been following the development of the heavy lift project for a long time.

Not true. There's less economic mobility here than in many western nations and most wealth in America is inherited.

I wonder what if anything has been sacrificed or traded to create higher economic mobility. Another question, is the USA's economic mobility optimal? Being lower than another western country is relative not absolute. What is full economic mobility? Wake up poor, make a million by lunch and loose it by dinner?

I love when important topics come up and people, who have to coexist in society, work towards better understanding each other. Im not a fan of restricting these threads.

Who told you that? Most wealth is inherited? Such utter nonsense. Less economic mobility here than other western countries? Really? If there is such wealth and prosperity in other more "enlightened" countries why does our economy dwarf those? Why is America the most prosperous place on the planet and in human history? Why are we the only superpower on the globe?

I know many people want to believe that wealth is largely inherited but rather it is created through peoples ambitions, knowledge and motivation which free people pursue. I deal with wealthy people continually and have for over 35 years. What I have found is they are unlike the pop culture stereotypes...........usually they are anything other than uppity and smug and the vast majority of them have busted their butts to get what they have (I am usually curious as to how people have made their wealth so I usually ask what they do or have done for a living). In 35 years I have never heard 1 person say "Oh, my Daddy made a lot of money and passed it on". It has always been a tale of hard work and investments. I like you Miss Molly but you are largely a purveyor of misinformation (i.e. people with wealth don't deserve it and didn't work for it etc. etc. etc.)

Yes, it is true that wealth is created. And the very wealthiest get most of it, and the poor none of it. That's also true."

I concede your first point and stand corrected although I do draw a distinction between being misinformed and being a liar. Fair enough?

The second point I will take issue with. If wealth is created then that creative option is available to all, rich or poor, who live in a free society. I repeat my previous statement that rags to riches stories are a dime a dozen in the united States. That is in stark contrast to most of human history where you had a ruling class and then the poor. Yes I understand that some folks are born on third base and others without a bat. But the possibility of upward mobility exists in a free market society like no other system in history. That is a simple fact and an undeniable reality (Free market capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other). The Great Experiment which is the United States will only fail when the populace decides to keep voting themselves a raise. Even our "so called" poor typically have cell phones, food provided, health care and air conditioning. Compare that with poverty you find in third world countries. Quite a contrast.

The propaganda we so often see is a pie shape with one small segment hoarding all the "pie" and not "sharing". If wealth is created, as you agree, then one is free to bake their own pie and does not need anyones permission to do so. At least that is the case in the USA......so far. We could discuss further how the country is heading into a largely post Constitutional phase and how the country is regressing to a bygone era of large centralized bureaucracies which will lead to what you describe (a two tier society / which is anything but Progressive BTW) but that is beyond the scope of the thread. Nice chatting with you, thank you for pointing out my miscue concerning Miss Molly.

How about restricting them to the politics forum at least? Posts like " you are largely a purveyor of misinformation" - which is basically calling someone a big fat liar - don't belong here IMHO. So much for the oath of respect and dignity.

It's a brilliant marketing move- and it worked because it's being discussed. Not only is it an easy press headline, It makes the high-tech company look cheeky and fun, and reminds everyone that the people who made a rocket two times as capable as the current heavy lifter at 1/6 of the cost...also make electric cars too.

I thought I knew how rockets worked until I saw the video of the two boosters turn around and fly back to the launchpad by themselves where they landed upright at the same time. Mind blown and perception changed.

You have to admire the visionary ambition of Musk. From Paypal to tesla to spacex to solar power to batteries, he has changed the future of several industries. He realizes how things can be done better, and then bucks current trend/understanding to make it happen.

Well, we are all interested in what we are interested in (if that makes any sense > "Go Fighting Illini" etc. etc.)

A red Tesla.......I bet its a neat car to drive. They should of put a faithful stuffed canine sporting a huge grin and goggles next to the unwitting passenger. Now THAT would of been clever marketing!

And of course my favorite canoe color is black.......as in carbon fiber black. Well at least until that first rock leaves a nice long white mark ;-)

Teslas suck, even red ones. Red Subaru Outbacks with the 6 cylinder engines are way better. Even better than green Foresters with stick shifts and four cylinder engines. The noise was cool, lots of fire works, it was cool that the boosters found their way home. If the main rocket could have safely hit that sea platform, that would have been cool. Proving that it could be a heavy lifter by taking some junk and tossing it out in space, that is really not all that much to lift. If they wanted to prove it could toss an unnecessarily heavy piece of junk into space, they should used a Harley or a Chevy pickup. Around here when folks want to get rid of an old car they either park out in the back of the grove or try to sell it to some sucker for twice what it is worth. If someone tried to leave a Tesla in my grove, I would call the cops.

Bill with all due respect why not make the same observation toward Miss Molly? Saying that most wealth is inherited is a false statement and a very political statement wether you understand the implications or not. If most wealth is inherited it is thus undeserved and therefore it becomes quite easy to confiscate it (since the recipient didn't really work for it) and give it to others who are perhaps "more deserving" (vote for us and we will give you other peoples stuff).

While I do my best to not be overtly political I will always stand for truth. The vast majority of wealth in this country is created not inherited. Thats the truth, plain and simple. As for upward mobility I suspect what Miss Molly refers to is a government provided flat and a pint of Guiness.
