Captain Obvious: "seems to me the obvious place would be McQuade small boat harbor"

Normally, yes. Right now it's completely frozen and you get to dodge the fish houses, to boot.

I would also be wary with regards to ice on the rocks, which may make launching any boat a bit dicey.

Don't know if this helps - the "dock" might make it work.

Looking for any useful information as to where I could launch a canoe next week. It's been 3 weeks since the big lake has allowed me to paddle and the ice is growing around the Duluth harbor and south shore. My normal launch area near Park Point will not work.
I expect to head north along the shore til I find a place I can park and get my boat in the water without having to walk over ice to do it.

Brighton Beach will be the first place to try and then I'll head north along the old scenic highway. If anyone local or travelers in the next few days can give me a better idea where I can find a beach connected to liquid water, I'd appreciate it.

Here's yesterday's ice image. Looks good all the way up the shore. Subject to change without notice!

My guess would be the French River as the current should keep it open, otherwise any of the rivers.

Did you spy on him for me:) Is he in paddling shape or is he like me, looking for water to practice in."

Well, his paddling partner is probably his secret weapon by far. But he does tuck in his belly way better than me. Haha. He's one upping you, he's practicing in Florida! The rest I'm forbidden to share.

Drove the north shore on Monday, 2/5 (and it's been cold since then).

All the way from GM to Duluth the immediate shore was free of ice. But from higher points on the shore one could see sizeable ice sheets floating off shore. The winds were from the NW so I'm guessing that those ice sheets extended all the way to the south shore. With the cold weather since then, it seems likely the ice cover has increased.

Met your buddy who builds the Krueger boats. Sounded like he was heading to Florida soon.

Thanks for the visual!

Mark seems like a good guy. I'll be seeing him down there. He's bringing a paddle partner and some sails- I may see if I can keep up.

Might not be so obvious since a bunch of people are ice fishing in Agate Bay today!

Yup, bays and especially harbors will be frozen up tightly. Even exposed shorelines can be tricky. Here's a pic of the sand beach of Park Pt 3 weeks ago. The sands were very well hidden under piles of frozen wave deposited ice.

It's also good to have places to get off the lake, in case an ice sheet comes in to make a canoe sandwich out of me:)

That picture makes me think of the Titanic. By the way, I only know about Agate Bay because of the web cam, so I can’t help any further.

This helps to see that open water is very close to shore but not a great launch condition. The view of the lake is very nice around sunrise.

The forecast definitely is looking better for the upcoming week.
