April 24-28, three of us will be circumnavigating Powwow Hiking Trail, or what’s left in the northern section. Day 2 will be around South and North Wilder. I’ll give an update afterwards, hopefully someone on the board has more info. The last group through was spring 2016. It’s doubtful that the portage’s have been cleared, but we’ll see. There is a picture essay of that trip, access through the Meetup group “Friends of BWCA trails”.

there used to be some pretty good sized trees on South Wilder....day tripped there.
The site across from the portage to North Wilder was a nice one to stay at...

don't get turned around...

The other two in my group are veterans of the trail before and after the fire. Thankfully we have FS tracks on different GPS apps. A little worried about the depth of slushy snow on the trail and Tomahawk Rd in.

Can't remember the title right now but there is a book about two guys getting lost in the BWCA. One a boy scout guide who got a head injury and lost and the other about a guy who got 'turn around' on the trail down there.... He made some bad mistakes.... take some flagging tape along.

Yes a great winter read”Lost in the Wild” Jason Rasmussen on the Powwow Trail, fall 2001. This book was a bit scary, but intrigued me about this trail. Here’s the junction where he misses the turn and continues north toward lake Insula
