treehorn: "So why does Nina Moose lose its ice quicker than most lakes? Something to do with the water flow through it I assume?"
Partly yes and highndry is partly correct too. That combination help Nina Moose open up relatively early.
The DNR lake finder data says it is only 6' deep.

BWCA looking east. Picture was taken in October.
The ice on this lake goes out early compared with many lakes.

No idea, but the pic is magical.

I wish I could take credit for it. Another member of our party took the picture. He is a professional photographer that specializes in Black and White actually.

I have a feeling that's bigger water than the picture lets on.
The ice out hint doesn't really help me personally, but...
I'll say Bald Eagle.

Hard to tell from this view but the campsite has a unique kitchen area.
The lake is not in the Gunflint area.

Looking down on the "bench" in the kitchen area.
One of our group said the only thing that would make this trip better is if we heard the wolves howling. As if on queue they let loose. Buddy nudges me while sitting on this bench and says, "you can hit the stop button on the recorder now."
This lake is not know for its fishing.

Shallow muddy bottom as opposed to a deeper, granite-lined lake such as Gunflint I'd suppose.
