What's your drink of choice in the BWCA?

Personally, I can't stand whiskey so I drink brandy and water. A box of wine for a cup around the fire is great too. Sometimes I bring the little bottles of something to take pulls of and pass around too. Fireball has been the most recent choice.

What do you drink? If you bring something a bit stronger to drink straight, what would you recommend?

My favorite is E&J vsop brandy. Comes in a nice plastic bottle too.

I usually buy a bottle of wine and pour it into a Platy Preserve, rather than going with a boxed wine. But if a trip partner brings a box wine, I’ll likely partake,
I have a small metal flask for other kinds of stuff, be it rum or some Barenjaeger or something.. not really a bourbon drinker, but I am willing to learn!

Weird - posting this from iPhone and it changed “wine” to “whiskey”. What’s this telling me?

For many years it was blackberry brandy. Then my husband also started bringing a flask of Wild Turkey or Maker's Mark. Our drink of choice at home is Kentucky Bourbon, so any good small-batch bourbon would now fill the need. We didn't bring much; we were sippers, not drinkers in the BWCA.

A good scotch to sip.

Fireball straight or vodka mixed with powdered drinks if you want to get after it.

We bring some cheap red wine like Ménage or Apothic or similar in a wine platy. My wife and I have a glass—-we bring some type of plastic wine glass. Then maybe a glass by the fire if the kids go to bed before us. Some day that will probably reverse :)

A bladder from a box of wine is easy, whisky is tasty, and I've been known to dump a bunch of tang into a bottle of vodka......I'll drink about anything at the end of a good day

Cognac or Makers Mark depending on if the wife is along. Bought a small Nalgene bottle to hold it a few years ago. I have learned to bring extra when the wife is along. :-)

Barrel proof Rye is our drink of choice.

Having said that....one year we let a couple of exhausted newbs buddy up on our campsite on lake afton since they were coming out of an all day frost river paddle absolutely knackered and pretty late in the evening. The look on their face when they saw the only site on the lake was taken was just too pitiful to NOT let them stay with us.

They gratefully shared their fifth of Kessler with us that nite, and I swear it tasted 10X better than when I used to choke it down behind the gas station across from my old high school as a kid.

I normally bring two 1.75L of Karkov vodka - in plastic bottles of course. One raspberry, and the other regular vodka, blue raspberry koolaid, powdered powerade (berry blast I believe its called - blue kind), or glacier freeze gatorade powder. I keep powerade or gatorade in plastic planters peanut jars which work great!!! We normally just take swigs and chase it with our koolaids, gatorades, etc. My friends also bring similar stuff and we switch it up time to time but this is my "Go to." Its simple and easy...

I really like everyones ideas but I feel its already enough to prepare for your trip as it is and i don't want to have to pour booze into different containers... However, some flavored moonshine sounds like an exception.

What containers do you guys use to transfer you alcohol into?

First time in we did bring in a flask of whiskey for him and Lemon Dr. McGuillicuddy's for me. (why don't they make that anymore?!?)
That was the only time though. I don't know why we don't bring booze, we just don't.

Great Northern Wisconsin Whiskey, lake water, 1/2 nuun lemon-lime tablet. Let it disolve, enjoy! (FRED Water Bottles do great double duty as a whiskey flask)

Bandit Wine - hands down the best "box" wine, without any question. As an added bonus, it comes in 1/2 or 1 litre boxes, so you can disperse amongst the packs!

I have a stainless bottle that I will usually bring either some scotch or bourbon in. I'm thinking of picking up a couple demi-bottles of wine-in-a-bag for this year as it's just me and a couple of the kids.

I dunno. Maybe I'll bring some bourbon AND a small pouch of wine....

I took in a plastic Growler of beer from Boathouse in Ely last time. It was about the best beer we ever drank at the end of a tough first day. For my upcoming trip, I plan on taking in one of the hydro-flask growlers topped off at Fitgers on the trip up.

Vodka and lemonade mix will do in a pinch. Nothing too crazy, just nice to have a drink sitting by the lake in the evening.

Wow--lots of alcohol here.

I don't drink (alcohol). My friends often bring extra beverage, and my girlfriend is fond of powdered Gatorade, but I'm happy with water. Tea I suppose would be the only beverage-related extra I might commonly bring.

I usually drink water. Coffee in the mornings. Sometimes I will take some powdered Gatorade along to mix with the water. This year we stayed at the Forest Service campground on Kawishiwi so we did no portaging and brought along a few extra amenities. I had two bottles of Sprite.

A fun trick: Bring limes, cut them in half at the equator, squeeze them to make juice and pour tequila into the crater left behind in the lime. i.e. use them as a shot glass. A friend always brings a small flask of grand marnier to sprinkle on top. Instant margarita! It's a little messy, but delicious.

Cheap brandy in a plastic bottle.
Would rather take good rum or tequila. But then I would have to find a plastic bottle, and then I would have to unscrew the lids, and then pour the booze into the plastic bottle, and then screw the lids back on.
It's just too much work!!!!

Bourbon for me and the boys, mescal for my wife and I. Single-malt if I'm solo.

Loose leaf tea is always in the pack.

Well, the original post referenced alcohol, so I think that is why everyone answered with their cocktail preference. I only have 1 or2 at the end of the day around camp, during the day it's tea or coffee in the morning and water the rest of the time. Gotta stay hydrated!

A "friend" brought some "Canadian Mist" on a trip..
Really enjoy the stuff now for 'happy hour'

Lemonade Ice Tea Powder.

I am usually the only coffee drinker so I just bring my usual instant Folgers. This same 'friend' has been known bring those single things from Starbucks which I have been know to sample.

I used to bring those tea bag coffee things but don't bother with them anymore.

Aqua Mura water treatment really makes water out of the lake taste pretty darn decent.

We also brought High West Campfire this year, and it is a real treat. I tried it last year at the High West restaurant in the Salt Lake City airport and instantly knew what would be going on our next BWCA trip. The usual for our group is rye, bourbon, or scotch, so the masterful blend of all three from HW was an easy decision.

Woodford Reserve (high rye bourbon) has also been a group favorite and probably will be packed again for some trips. I like scotch, but nips from the flask in the backcountry just seem better with bourbon or rye.

I've brought in pre-mixed Bloodys in Nalgenes - soak 'em in the lake to keep cool. Otherwise, it's Tanquery and tonics for cocktail hour (with a fresh lime, of course), red wine with the first night steaks, bourbon or single malt for sipping in the evening, and my brother-in-law always brings a flask of Benedictine to celebrate landing a nice fish. Oh, and water, lots and lots of water.
