June 2018 on Vista Lake (EP47). My first time to the BWCA was this solo trip and I got super lucky in claiming the prime campsite on Vista Lake for the first three nights of my trip.

Ice Out Lights

The day after ice out on Kawishiwi Lake, April 2017. I wound up staying up all night watching and photographing the Northern Lights. Had to go out looking for firewood at 3AM as I had burnt it all staying up and making coffee all night. An incredible night under the northern lights.

Beautiful picture KerryG!"

Thanks so much. Probably the most beautiful river landscape of any trip I've ever been on. This year we're paddling the Berens so as a photographer I'm very excited.

A "Great Camp" is not only beautiful scenery that you pick for a campsite. A great camp is a place to call home... a place that you are comfortable and can have fun at, regardless of the weather around you! Here is a fun game of cards under the tarp as the rain passes by on Long Island Lake.

Horse lake. One of many great campsites. I just don't have a lot of great pictures to represent them. There's usually too much clutter.

Our high-ground campsite on Ahsub Lake provided a beautiful view of the whole lake. We also had access to the nearby hiking trail, which brought us to the very top of the hill where we could see Ahsub Lake and Disappointment Lake at the same time. The night at this camp was so clear, we slept with the rain fly off and had a fantastic view of the stars.

"Yeah, I thought it was a Saivo. I use a Rogen and an Enan (that's the Rogen in my picture above), don't see many Hillebergs up there. Of course my two are Hille's answer to "lightweight" tents, similar build quality but not nearly the bomb shelter that your Saivo is."

It is a bit of overkill but where we are doing a lot of our trips these days mean camping on rock and often very exposed. We caught a couple of storms last year where we were sitting ducks and man, was I glad for that tent. And hell, we only live once, so why not?

It would be an overstatement to claim this camp was "great" from a livability perspective, but I really loved the photogenic nature of this campsite from our trip we just got back from. This was taken last Friday, July 6, at the site on the Kawishiwi just west of Hudson Lake in the burn area just before sunset.

Yes, that's a gorgeous picture. What tent is that?"

Thanks. It is a Hilleberg Saivo. Last year was our first year with it. Our Mutha Hubba gave out after close to ten years. It was a pretty good tent but no comparison to the Hilleberg in terms of build quality, total weather protection, ventilation and overall comfort. Of course, you pay for that.

Going to go 'way back down memory lane here. 1980. We are still discussing where this campsite is, and we don't know (Minn or McAree, perhaps?) The trip was Quetico and Voyageurs, only six days, and we repeated our first trip route (the 1971 Namakan River Route), in addition to exploring some other territory new to us. One highlight was an evening at a campsite (not this one) on LLC when we watched firefighters battle a blaze on a small island.

It was our fifth canoe trip, but only our fourth in the BWCA/Q/V area. (In 1979 we traveled in Algonquin PP.)

When I look at this photo it brings back how simple our trips were back then. Just the two of us, Grumman canoe for a table, Duluth pack, camp saw hanging on the tree. Solitude. Wool shirt thrown on the canoe. No tarp, no stool, no Bear Vault, not even a water filter. When I look at this photo, there is almost an innocence to it.
