When do the loons leave the northern lakes and head south? Will they still be there the last week of September?

Thanks!

There are some around well into November most years. As long as there is open water they will hang around. I always hear them by my cabin during deer season.

Back in the late 80s I was lucky to enough to see 20-30 Loons rafting up as they call it before the migration south. It was on Alpine lake just west of Seagull on a Labor day trip. Could not have been too much later after that.

I've seen them as late as the 3rd week of October.

I'm usually there the last 2 weeks of September and usually see some, but it can be a little hit or miss sometimes.

By late September I've generally found only juveniles still around, and man, are they starved for attention!

You'll still see them, but they will be molting into their winter clothes. Might throw you off for a second.

Thanks folks!

Well, I'll either hear them this year or I won't.
