My boy is something just short of a machine, but to get ready for him I read "The Best Way to Train Your Gun Dog" and "Training the Hunting Retriever", both by Bill Tarrant. They are sort of old school, so I picked and chose what to use. Also mixed in learnings from a bunch of Cesar Milan, and my BIL's training manual for police K9. I ended up with a very obedient dog.

Another Wolters fan here.

Tom Dokken's "Retriever Training" Trained 2 Chesapeake/lab mixes with it. Also read into clicker training as a way to mark good behaviors. Consistency and repitition are the keys. Good luck!

I've found a few good dog training books. However, I've had no success in getting my golden retriever to read them.

This is a timely post for me. My husband is also a grouse hunter and we have a new pup. We've had our yellow lab puppy for a week now, so she is 8 weeks old. She goes through spells where she pounces and attacks my feet with those needle sharp teeth. Very single minded about it. She needs to lighten up or those birds will be full of holes!

I highly recommend both books by Richard A. Wolters. Gun dog and Water dog. I have had great results using his methods.

Yeah, they aren’t as smart as you think. Chesapeake’s now they can read... My Bernie loved field and stream. Kira on the other hand reads the Bible. And being dyslexic she thinks man should worship dog.

Hey folks,
I’m getting a 1/2 lab 1/2 golden retriever for Christmas. I’m interested in training her to hunt grouse and pheasant.
Anyone have suggestions on reading material that would help me train Deedee to be an upland hunting machine?
Thanks,
Mr. B

If video learning is better for you, Freddy King on you tube has a great series (free). He also has more specific technical videos on his pay site. https://www.theretrievertrainer.com

We got our first ever bird dog (GSP) almost 2 years ago and she's been a great hunter. Gun Dog by Wolters I got used on Amazon and then a little of Sporting Dog and Retreiver training the Wildrose Way. We took bits and pieces from both along w/ some YouTube.
When they're young, keep everything only a few minutes long at a time. You can "train" a little bit every day a few times a day. Whether it's obedience, learning commands, or whatever they're always learning and listening.
