I'm going to read up on it more; I do know there are concerns re habitat destruction and release of greenhouse gases.

Helium is not a greenhouse gas. It is pretty important in semiconductor production along with the balloons and such.

Who would have thunk, I saw the headline and thought someone had a plan to ease portage weights.

Once that helium is extracted, I suppose the inflated ground will subside and create a large depression... which will fill in with water and create a new lake?

That's actually a great idea. And one not to take too lightly.

It is indeed a weighty subject.

Nah, Solid bedrock up there. Deposit is like 2000 feet deep.
Looks like extracting helium will be pretty low impact. Probably the bigger problem will be trying to prevent the CO2 and methane that make up nearly 90 percent of the gas deposit from being released into the atmosphere.

I don't know enough to make an intelligent comment about this but I have two questions.
What potential problems?
What economic benefits?
Can anybody enlighten me?

Well, that is interesting! Helium extraction traditionally does not cause pollution and there is a shortage in the world. Maybe make some jobs? I'm sure there will be environmental studies done on the pollution risk. I'll hold my opinion until more data comes in.

I don't know anything about the volume of helium there. But, I can attest to the cost of helium skyrocketing .
