I've thought of sewing the patches on fishing vests for the kids... packs seem to come and go, or vary from trip to trip...
Any other ideas of where to collect your patches? Haven't started sewing yet - what other neat ideas do people have?

Yes, a BWCA.com patch!
I sew them on to my packs.

Sorry the updates have been so slow in coming. The artwork is in Adam's hands at the moment. As soon as he gets back from China he will finalize the design so they can be ordered. When the order is placed, production should take 7-10 days. Be patient, they are getting closer. As soon as Adam and I work out the final details, I will post the info here.

Whoever you settle on, find out if they will save the artwork/setup/config information for re-orders. It should save some trouble (and possibly some setup fees) if/when more stock is needed.

Sew them myself. I've sewn a lot of patches on myself over the years. Pretty easy to do. Thread the needle, stick the needle in, pull the needle through. Personally, I get more satisfaction out of doing it myself then paying someone several bucks to do it.

Most dry cleaners will sew on a patch for a buck or two apiece. Several of the families in my Cub Scout pack bring their shirts to me now as I have a sewing machine and am always happy to do it for them. It saves them cash and it helps me have correctly uniformed Scouts. Win-win!

I submitted a patch design to the selection committee but they rejected it. It was uncluttered but expressive: the words NEARLY EVERYTHING overlaid by a circle with a line thru it from 10:00 to 4:00. Too subtle, I guess.

My apologies to you all. I had volunteered to make the patches a reality, and my plan kind of slipped through the cracks. I talked to Adam @ fall Wing and got the info and ok to proceed. I hope you might reconsider. As I stated earlier in this topic, I could forsee patches being an item being offered for donations to the site rather than just an outright purchase. Two sizes could be available; small for shirts and hats and such, and a larger patch for jackets and packs and whetever. Say 3" and 6". Put in a bulk order, say 500 each. I'd be willing to give a donation to the site to defray some of the cost. I think this is a winner here and you'll be ordering a second batch before you know it. What do you all think?

Seems like a fine idea. And I think most people who want one would want more than one--pack, hat, fleece vest, etc. Any reasonable cost/structure should be ok. I'll take 3..

I've had patches made for scout events before, often well below that $5.00/each figure. Of course, it depends on the size and number of colors overall. It would likely be worth checking prices through a number of places.
I also know the DE with the local Scout district, and I know he gets patches printed a few times each year, so he likely knows where to get the on the cheap.

There are several patches available from the BW. Some are generic, some specific to the gunflint trail or other areas. I purchase them to commemorate the trips for the students I take. They, like Boy Scouts, usually love them.

A patch? If I stick one on my arm will it take away the effects of not being in the BWCA? Will I be able to stop logging in from work? Will my wife stop complaining about how much time I spend thinking about the BWCA? I think I'm against them.
Actually I have never seen any collectible types for the BWCA. Then again I've never looked for them either.

I met a couple of elderly gentlemen on a portage on Knife Lake in 2004. They had BWCA patches (many) on their tired old Duluth packs. Looked like they had been collecting them for a few years, it was kinda cool...
As mentioned earlier many of the outfitters and stores carry them. CBO carries quite a few. Some of them are real works of art with incredible color and detail....I guess if you had some on your pack it would be easier to identify! Just a thought...

Trading patches is very popular within the fire services. If you're a firefighter and you visit another station, you'd better have a patch with you to trade. With that patch, you're instantly welcomed and most likely invited for dinner.
I haven't seen many patches in and around the BWCA, but then again I haven't really looked. Sticking with one outfitter doesn't help either unless they (Lynn) gets a new version each year. That would be kind of neat, actually, a different patch each year with the year stitched on there.

I made a canoe bag for everyone on our trip, just a duck cloth fabric bag with a nice zipper and straps that fit under the canoe seat. It holds a plastic box of fishing lures and a water bottle. I sewed a USA flag patch and a Maryland flag patch on them. Then I saw the thread for the "Demerit Patch" web site and started collecting patches for the individual bags and every body loved them. I have spent the last three months sewing patches of all kinds on the bags. My wife thinks I am nuts! But the Kids love them. We have started collecting flag patches from every country or state we have fished. Plus we have added special interest patches, music, sports ect. It has been fun and the bags are cool looking. We got some BWCA patches in Ely and every body got a new Minnesota flag patch.

When I was a wee one and my parents took me into the boundary waters we went out of an outfitter on the end of the gunflint...dont remember which one. Anyways they had an outfitter patch and them about a 3" patch that was a canoe paddle. Every trip we got another paddle to go with the main outfitter patch. As a kid I thought it was kinda cool. I wonder if my old windbreaker with the patches is still around somewhere...hmmm

I would think the packs would stick around longer than the life jackets. Kids outgrow them fairly quick. I know life jackets stick around a while though. At the lake cabin we have many PFD's and several are from the 70's when I was a kid. I think a pack or on a tent is the best place to put them. I know many would be concerned about disrupting the integrity of a tent wall so I say sew them on the pack. Or a rain fly for a tent.

My favorite place for patches is on an old, wool blanket, the kind you can find at the Army-Navy stores. I think fleece might work, too, but won't be as durable in the long term.
A blanket is a bit more to carry (if you have a light sleeping bag), but it's great to have on those cool evenings, and makes a fine picnic pad.

Either that or adam can order them himself and sell them on a really great website. Here is our 5 year old "pillows" pack. We pick up a patch whenever we camp at a State Park. We have missed a few due to the State Park being out of them, but most are accounted for. If we Stay at the same Park twice and they don't have a "different" patch, he can pick out a pin. We did get a Gunflint Trail patch when we stayed at Gunflint Pines, but I haven't seen any Boundary Waters ones yet. We don't have any outfitters patches being we don't use them, (Have to "Earn" them) but it would be neat if they would carry patches for each entry point. pillow's little brother "pillows 2" has been earning them too, but we are waiting for him to get a little older before he gets his own pack.
....He got is name tag from his Uncle's uniform who is retired Air Force.

Hey Adam! Just a thought.... You could sell BWCA.com patches, and then have the smaller "stripes" for each entry point. you would probably sell more of them than stickers. (Not that I don't like my sticker...)

Skilletmary and I bought a patch last August from Canadian Border Outfitters to commemorate our first BWCA trip. She put it in the pocket of her cargo pants and we haven't seen it since.
I thought about starting to collect them but decided against it for now. Maybe if I sold my Minnesota State Park coffee mug collection I started in the 1980's but lost interest in I will...or the old fishing lures, coins, matchbooks, duck stamps, rocks, Edward Abbey books, National Geographics, etc, etc, etc.
I do like looking at the patches when I'm at the various outfitters or gift shops. Some are very detailed and of high quality. The designs are good too.
I like Trygve's idea about a BWCA.com tattoo or even a brand like on cattle. I think any member who reaches 20,000 post should be obligated to get one.

I've thought about looking for patches for the BWCA when I am up there but don't remember until after I am home. Would like to put some on the packs. I do buy patches at the state parks I stay at. I've got 5 more parks to get to before I can say I have been to all of MN's parks. I have sewn onto my car camping tent the patches for the parks I have actually stayed at. Used to get a lot of patches in the BSA also. In the military patches were a big trading item with people in a foreign military. Got to spend a couple weeks on a German destroyer once and got a lot of cool ones there. So, somewhere there is a box in the garage with a lot of old patches (BSA and military) that will probably just rot or get thrown out by some great-grandchild that will have no idea where they all came from.
