I say it's BEAR Scat myself...definetely not Moose and I don't think it's a deer. I think it's BEAR POOP.

I would have said bear scat too, but after looking at PJ's site and the tracking book I have at home, I'm joining the deer camp. The tracking book says that White-tail scat clumps together when there is moisture in the food in summer; the dry pellets are more from a winter diet.

UncleMoose, great link. I had tried searching for similar but didn't find that one. Fitting that you would find the right link. I deem this scat definitely moose scat! Would have been cool if it had left its deposit while we were camped there, but, alas, I fear we were about a month too late.

I don't think it's blue. I think it's old; black and greying.

Smelling it is deceiving... Tasting it is the real test. Tastes like... Glad I didn't step in it.

Okay this thread is going downhill fast. And it started with scat, so that is really saying something!

quote nojobro: "Do you know this scat? Obviously older when photographed...but what dropped it? I would say moose or bear, based on the size of the pile. Are moose berries always like berries, or can they vary like deer scat, which is sometimes pellets and sometimes more like a mini cow pie (though with some shape to smaller pieces within, to do a poor job of describing it), depending on diet?

The blue scat comes from the remnants of the Kelty rain fly he ate last week.

Big deer was very constipated before that pile happened. :) Unless thats a very big shoe, I don't think it's that big of a pile. My ten point laid a pile similar just before I shot him. I usually associate that type of pile to a big buck, I don't know why. It's usually shaped more like a log turd with similar consistancy and not so spread out. Not sure if that makes any sence... It's late, I better hang it up.

A deer can have a "movement" something like that. Not sure why, but I see it a lot.

It's not moose. Moose dropping tend to be large brown oval. Pretty symmetrical and smooth. About the size of the end of your finger. Well, a mans finger any way. Somewhere around 3/4's of an inch to an inch in length, and maybe slightly over 1/2 inch in diameter.

Here's a pic:

Doe droppings are small round pellets, and don't stick together like buck droppings. I'm pretty sure your pic is from a buck. But they don't usually have that big a spread. But then maybe I just haven't seen a 200 inch class buck droppings.

I've seen plenty of deer scat that was clumped up from eating wet foods. But this looks like four times that amount to me. Otherwise I would have immediately thought deer. Is the most massive buck ever roaming the BWCA? ;-)

Maybe it's from one of us.... from the last wing nite, after eating Kendras moose plums, and mixing it with my saurkraut.
