quote Mocha: "how many of these cabins are out there? I know of the one on Kekekabic lake, Little Sag lake, and now this one." There's one on Lac La Croix as well, at the blue dot in the middle of the map, right here.

I've seen similar cabins on various BWCA lakes over the years. Never paid much attention to them.

the one on Lac La Croix has a nice cabin, a boathouse, a nice latrine, and years ago it used to have a sauna...It's probably the nicest one I've seen anywhere.

I believe it is a USFS cabin used to restock and or store supplies, latrines, fire grates etc. It has a short dock and looks like a log sided boat house. Maybe 500' from the campsite analyzer mentioned.

Shoot! Are you talking near camp #1548? We stopped for lunch at that site and had no idea. Now you guys are making me go back... torture...
And, now I see that the cabin foundation is mentioned on the maps on this site.

The cabin near Lower Basswood Falls that still exists is used by the USFS for storage. I was there when a couple of Rangers happened by in 2000 and they let me look around inside as I helped them unload supplies.
There also used to be another cabin nearby, just up the hill a bit. In Michael Furtman's book "A Season for Wilderness" he wrote about a summer he and his wife lived in this cabin as they volunteered for the Forest Service. This cabin burned down one winter about 15-20 years ago when some visitors broke in to use it and tried to start a fire to warm themselves. When I visited, again in 2000, you could still see the footprint and a few remains of the burnt down cabin that was once there.

Folks, Is there some kind of cabin on the Lake at the top of the Horse River just below Lower Basswood Falls? Curious, Rick

As I recall, there is a campsite just below the falls, on the south shore. On that same shore line, a little "west", is a little shack. I suppose that's what you are referring to. I don't think I'd call it a cabin though.

USFS has a boat house in the bay with a dock. The old cabin was burned down years ago. If you hike back from the camp or the boathouse you will see the old cabin remnants pretty easily. Michael Furtman used to stay with his family for the summer and work the area for enforcement way back when it was used by the forest service.

Yikes! It looks like people break into that cabin.
