There is a whole different climate up there. But there is Sylvania , Craig Lake SP, Big Island Lake . yep some nice places to go when the water will every get soft again.

I am retired 3 years. Moved to the UP 10 years ago with a job change and stayed for lack of a better place to go! My wife and I spend a couple months each winter in Florida... there is a limit to how much ice fishing and winter camping I can do. UP winters are long! But the summer is great with fishing and camping activities that are hard to beat. The tourist traffic in the summer is amazing. September and October are fantastic!
Have fun looking ahead and planning for retirement!

I'm not sure where you're located, but there are a few good people that work on sailboats & smaller boats too in the Bayfield, WI area. Is that too far for you?

Interesting suggestion. Bayfield is about 175 miles north while Madison is about 145 miles south. Wausau is about a 45 mile drive to the northeast.

I just purchased a Mad River Independence canoe in kevlar that needs the ash gunwales and decks replaced. It would be great if it could be done in the northcentral part of the state but please let me know about repair that can be completed in other parts of WI.

Is the rot the same on the opposite end? with no issues in the center? If it were mine I would scarph new tips on the gunwales and decks instead of having new ones made. Any woodworker should be able to handle that job.

Looks like the evils of leaving a canoe flipped over on wet ground too long.....ouch. It's not that hard to replace the rails and decks......once you find the right wood and get them made ;) It does look like the damage is limited to the one end, so scarfing is an option plus fabricating one new deck.
I redid all the wood on a MR canoe years ago (a Malecite). Ordered a knock down gunwale kit from eds canoe and installed it myself. Had a woodworker friend make some new decks.
If your whole project falls apart, let me know and I'll give you a few bucks for the whole mess ;)
   
BTW, I'm not a great woodworker but I slowly struggled through it and it turned out fine and was rewarding.

BTW.....I'm totally serious if you ever want to sell that Indy. I bought a FG layup a few years ago (it's wood was pristine...sorry...) and I love paddling that boat, but I have always had my eye open for a Kevlar version. Enjoy your boat!

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to share their knowledge and opinions. I now know of craftsmen in Boulder Junction, WI and Madison, WI who would work on my canoe but through another source I have been contacted by some individuals in Stevens Point, WI who build, restore and repair canoes and I could join them to rebuild my Independence. I have already located sources for gunwales, decks, thwarts and seats so I will be working on a repair/upgrade.
Sorry, Cowdoc! You won't get to take over my kevlar hull!

Thanks for your reply. The damage is at both ends of the canoe and unfortunately, I do not have the aptitude or the skills for this project. In fact, my DIY history for tasks outside my comfort zone suggests I have a preternatural ability to turn a simple repair into a disaster.
