I know, but on a longer trip I will run out of live bait. I will forage under rocks and stumps for something to use but that isnt always reliable. Just wondering if anyone uses a artificial bait that works.

Might look at MG Lures. Their grubs can be had with several baked in scents....shad and crawdad included.

A couple guides on lake vermilion were using pork crawlers with good success last summer. Never tried them, but for a longer BWCA trip they might be worth a try?

What are you fishing for, when are you going and what techniques do you prefer?

I go multiple times every year. More of in spring and fall. We normally target walleye and northern and catch a fair amount amount of smallies.

Some people like to use Gulp leeches......

My issue with live bait in the BWCA/Quetico is that it is not a very good search option. If you like putting a rod in a holder from camp or you have spots already found then I would say that it is the best. If you use a bottom bouncer and go faster I think you are eliciting more of a reaction bite anyway so you might as well use Gulp. In the Spring for walleye it's hard to beat pitching plastics in current or rocky points. In the Fall, when they are deeper, I use blade baits around edges of deep humps or points. I troll crankbaits from one jigging spot to the next.
Jerk baits are fun at night or on wind swept points and shorelines.

I have used these successfully for a couple of years. They are very realistic and you can can catch multiple fish before they need to be replaced. The only downside is that they stink and they make your hands stink too.

You might try "Slimer" leeches. Good flimsy action for artificial

We are normally use leeches if they are available, but I'm planning a longer trip this year and would love to know if anyone has used these or something similar to catch fish. I've tried Gulp with only ok results. Just curious if there is anything you have found successful. I realize nothing beats live bait.
