There are Walleyes in Western Lake, about a 200 rod portage (give or take) from Buck Lake.
Some claim that Glenmore Lake has Walleyes, which is another 190 (?) rod portage from Western. That portage isn't the nicest one when you get close to Glenmore, if my memory serves me correctly.
I've heard that these lakes are better when the water warms up. We didn't have much luck on the fishing opener many years back, but had did well in late June.

quote drrick: "Thanks for all the information. How is the fishing in the series of lakes southwest of Crab?" Might want to make a cast or two on battal....

No walleyes in Cummings. There may be some in Crab but I'm not sure. If you take the long portage into Buck you will probably have the lake to yourself and definitely catch plenty of walleyes.

As far as lures we had good luck on all the standard stuff, leeches under a slip bobber or on a jig, jigs and grubs/paddletails, and trolling cranks. Don't forget to bring some topwaters for the smallies.

I stayed on Cummings/Crab and caught zero walleye. Plenty of small smallmouth bass in Cummings but struggled to catch anything of size. We took the long portage into Buck and did well on walleyes. Had most of our luck on the western half of the lake.

There are no walleyes in Crab or Cummings. You'll need to portage into Big Moose or Buck for walleyes. Both portages are long but certainly doable for day trips.

We are going in at Crab Lake the week prior to Memorial weekend. Will probably stay on Crab a day and then head up to Cummings and base camp for the week. Should we have low medium or high expectations as far as the Walleye fishing goes ? Thanks for your help and any lure in particular to bring along? Rick

I would say low if concentrating on walleyes. But if you take the long portage north to Big Moose I think you will be able to catch your share of Walleyes!
