Fishing from shore you are limited to where you can fish, so I doubt any fish finder would be helpful. I have fished many years without a finder and I've found plenty of fish. I purchased the Deeper because of the weight and relative simplicity of battery power. Other than the few glitches, the Deeper helped me locate fish and as a result catch fish(from my canoe). I used it on a lake that I previously fished without a finder. Had I not used the Deeper I probably would have not caught any fish. There may be better products out there but so far this is working just fine.

the advantage I am thinking for canoe use is that it floats. Just tile a parachute cord to it and toss it out. No need to "cast" it.

How much do those bob around in the wind and waves?

haven't tried it out yet. Will next week. When in BWCA we don't go out if the waves are signficant.

Has anyone used one of these. Got one for my birthday. Was considering bringing it to BWCA next year. I have an 8 inch Android tablet I was going to use for it. Battery life is not a problem as I have a "brick" recharger that will charge the tablet 6 times. I had been looking for something that did not have the heavy battery or was big and bulky.

The Deeper has about a 7-8 hour charge. It cannot be charged while in use. I purchased one and I have used it on several day fishing trips this spring. As far as locating fish it seems to work pretty well as well as reading structure, depth and surface water temperature. I paired it with an iPhone 6 and the screen size, although a little small, works for me. I did have to recharge my phone during the day, which I expected. My only complaint so far is the app that goes with the Deeper. It has lost connection and I've had trouble re-connecting with the Deeper, especially after I've taken a break. I've had to open and close the app many times before the app works properly again. Also, I bought the arm clamp for trolling. The clamp is strong and does come with a lanyard in case the clamp comes loose(If the clamp were to detach, it would sink along with your Deeper to the bottom of the lake).
