Will be in Rochester on business the next few days. Was thinking of hitting some trout streams for a couple days on my way home. Any suggestions on good places to start??

South Branch of the Root River from Preston to Lanesboro is one of the best. Plus a great bike trail and not bad canoeing either. Was there over Labor Day. But the river is pretty shallow right now for canoeing, hit the bottom quite a bit.

I had a great time on my short trip . I left Rochester on Friday morning, and ended up at beaver Creek Valley State park outside of Caledonia. The campground was pretty nice, would definitely stay there again. After talking to some very friendly locals , I decided to fish Beaver Creek downstream from the mill. Didn't have my fly rod with me, so I just fished with ultralight spinning outfit, small slip bobber, plain hook and piece of crawler. Caught Rainbows in the deep holes. No big fish, but some nice 8 to 12 inches. Would love to spend some more time fishing the region with a fly rod, and hook some of the big browns that the region is noted for.

The whitewater in Carley State Park has always been good to me too. Nice little park that is only open for camping from Memorial to Labor Day. go every year to Whitewater the week after opener and fish it and Trout Run with moderate luck. Always do better at Carley. Got a 15.5 inch Rainbow there a couple years ago. Intended to go back and camp there this summer but dang, life just gets in the way sometimes.

I used to fish a tributary of the whitewater quite a bit. It is called beaver creek, not far from Elba. A beautiful setting and usually caught a bunch of brown trout . I used live bait.good luck! Marc
