I have had very good luck with this hammered little cleo. I tried a new color last spring that worked well . It a white cleo with a red nose. I like to use the 3/4 oz size. I also have had very good luck with clown colored rapalas.

Where can you buy Sutton Spoons? You can place bids on Ebay and I have seen the FB page that Sutton Spoon has but where is their website where you can actually BUY something? A little help? "

Call the number, they are nice to work with. Lots cheaper to order straight from them than through another off Ebay.

I have no Sutton Spoons and have never used one so I will have to get some. What model do you fellers use? I like fishing for bigger fish so keep that in mind if you toss some suggestions my way. Of course they will take walleyes as well? Anybody change the hooks out? Any difference in action?

My favorite laker bait has always been a pearl white Swedish pimple in a size seven. Another good one is the Elk Rapids jig. I'm pretty sure you can get to there web site googling Elk rapids jig, small business in Elk Rapids Mi. They work very good.

Like someone said-call them! Small town ma and pa over the phone sale. They are not high tech internet order that is at your house the next day people. Just nice people tha may or may not have what you want. They will tell you when they expect to get something not in stock.Good luck!!

Sutton in -Silver is my favorite.
Williams Warbler-blue and silver or half and half silver/gold.

If you're fishing deep real silver and not nickel makes a difference in fish seeing or not seeing your lure as silver reflects close to 95% of light and nickel is much less.

I asked if they had any dealers in northern Minnesota anymore, and it was explained that in recent years they had some production problems, and changed to only selling out of their shop in NY. Apparently they are working on setting a dealer system back up, but it may take awhile.

They may not have every style in stock at a given time, (they were out of silver, hammered 44's when I called), but have a large selection. "

Yea, It's good to see them back in 'full" production.
Great small town ma and pa business that makes a lure that is a step above the rest.

Did somebody bring up spoons and lakers (pike too) !!!!!!!!!! i love my spoons so much i have a foam padded case for them . my best producers in the BW and local have been the old original daredevil blk/wht and the little cleo , which isnt little(1.75oz) the gold/flo orange, notice both have black and white,, i've added custom trebles most off of ebay sellers.
the 2 daredevils date to the early 60's from grandpa's tackle box(1oz) ,,and notice the bite marks on both(yes since i've owned them )(LOL) , these old daredevils i wouldnt give up for anything , (mainly because the kids will get them) but still one of the best sspoons ever made (BAR NONE)(i made the dress treble on the flo/pink daredevil) also notice in the pic (lower right) the K.O. wobbler , a very thick little spoon that produces and is excellent in windy conditions , like casting from camp. i base camp/fish alot as i've got older and i cover some area with this spoon . the gold/red cleo is almost 3oz. got it off of ebay another great find but do need musky type equipment to cast it ;)

Silver on one side with chartreuse or fluorescent green on the other is really good, too. Especially when running closer to the surface.

Chrome and hammered silver have worked for me but my favorite is black and orange.

I caught my first laker, or lake char as they called them, in British Columbia. It was a fairly remote area and I was the only fisherman for a couple of days. I had had a couple of hookups which felt like snags, and I treated like snags, which helps to explain why I lost them.
A family arrived as school ended for the summer in the closest town. I noticed they seemed to be doing quite well with the lakers and so I approached them and asked what they were using. "Black and orange spoon", they said.
I took my only two black and orange spoons to them and asked which pattern they would choose. They pointed to one that had a pattern like the original dardevle (much thicker, though).
I took off in my canoe and in 20 minutes was back on shore with my first laker.
The other spoon I showed them (orange with black polka dots) caught my first laker in the Yukon on another trip.
A couple of weeks ago, I learned that I have mackinaw (as Californians call them) near my new home. I still have those black and orange spoons and one of them will be the first lure I try.

Silver, silver, and silver.

And by silver, I mean a true silver plating, like on a Sutton spoon. Not a cheaper nickle plating. They do look different when held side by side.

However I can never decided between hammered or plain, I'll have to catch another hundred or so on each before I can declare a clear winner :)

Yeah, I'm with Forrest on this one - silver, silver and silver. I have a large collection of Sutton spoons and I have heard that real silver plays differently than nickel or stainless in terms of how fish perceive them. Might be a load of malarkey but that's what I've heard.

Wow good question Dean. I have no informed opinion as have very limited experience trolling spoons for lakers. One thing I have observed however, is the endless supply of colors on Great Lakes Sport fishing boats and the chatter on various Great lakes Sport fishing forums talking about flutter spoon color choices.

FWIW my largest Laker in canoe country, a solid 15lb fish, weighed on a boga, hit a crank bait with an orange belly. I caught several other lakers that day all with the orange belly crank with a dark contrasting back.

My favorite color/bait is whatever seems to be working. I start out with everyone fishing something different. If 15-20 minutes pass and there are no strikes, change up and keep changing up until you figure out what is working. Sometimes there is a ‘magic’ color at a certain time on a certain day on a certain lake. Taken with my earlier post, I would study water clarity and light issues and how they affect Lakers if you want a more targeted response. Short answer: carry everything colorwise and lure types. I do better with deep cranks and swimbaits than I do with spoons, unless it’s a ‘spoon’ day. You have to feed them what they want.

We all have our favorite spoons and could argue that to no end. For this post I'm only interested in lakers and your favorite colors.

For me I always end up using silver of some sort; nickel, nickel/blue or hammered nickel."

Those are my favs........

Chrome and blue for me in a Little Cleo 1/2 Oz size. I think this color is good because it stays brighter deeper like a purple lure does.

Color depends on time of day, weather conditions, wind, lake clarity, and laker finickyness, along with lesser known variables.

A size 06 (not 6) or 88 will be big enough to take a 20+ lb fish.
I use a size 6 (1 -1.5 mph)for eater size lakers.
44 is another good size but you have to troll a little faster 2 mph.
The fatter and shorter the spoon the slower the troll. The longer and skinnier the faster. Troll the lure at speed next to the canoe to see the best speed and action.Flutter spoons with dimpled silver work best IMO.
No need to change the hooks unless you have to. I have the siawash (sic) hooks and they don't produce any better than stock hooks.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info.......I need to pull the trigger on these. Size 06 or 88 dimpled, got it.

Here is a sizing chart for Sutton spoons. There have been some good sizes already recommended. I have become a big fan of the #72 the past few years. It's a thinner, longer spoon, but I have caught a lot of nice fish on it.

You definitely will catch a higher percentage of smaller fish by going with a smaller spoon. Just depends on capacity of your particular lake, and what you want to go for.

Suttons are good. I heard the owner passed away and they stopped making spoons, at least for a while.

Best color for spoons is anything flashy. I like silver and or gold. Hammered texture seems to flash better.

Large doctors and william wobblers are my favorite. If you troll a large wobbler around in the right depth its only a matter of time before you get a laker.

Agreed on Warblers, Doctors are only good shallowerish imo.
I have bought Sutton’s for some years. They lost there local plater 4 years or so ago. They were hard to find and eBay was an expensive source. I once sold one there for over $100.00 (crazy. )From what I understand the kids are running it well now and they do take phone orders. I bought 10 spoons this summer from them over the phone and they were reasonably priced unlike eBay can be.

Surprised Len Thompson spoons haven't been mentioned. Great spoons, variety of colors and patterns. High quality to boot.
