My plans for the summer hopefully involve my first BWCA trip, but larger scale I'm hoping to make two trips from the following list: -BWCA (depending on availability of overnight motor permits). We want to get to Basswood and set up basecamp for 2-3 days of walleye fishing and hopefully some lake trout. Whether we put in on Fall Lake or Moose Lake, it looks like the portages are minimal and short. Looks doable for our 14ft boat w/ portage cart. I'm getting ready to submit my lottery entry, so my question: is there a better month to fish walleye or lake trout on either the East side of Basswood (Moose Lake entry) vs the West side (Fall Lake entry)? -Voyageurs National Park, basecamp on an island on Kabetogama Lake -Willow Flowage south of Minocqua, WI -Cass Lake for late-night, clear water walleye trolling. Camping on Star Island, which has its own lake, Lake Windigo. So a lake on an island on a lake :) Quick detour to Itasca State Park to visit the headwaters of the Mississippi, which we fish nearly year-round near our home. Again, I do not have access to canoes at this time. Am trying to convince my lovely spouse that there's room for a few more vessels in the marina (our tiny backyard in St. Paul). For now I have two fishing boats -- one heavy old fiberglass boat with a 50hp outboard on a trailer (river rat special), and one 14" Alumacraft rowboat that gets car-topped. I can rig this boat several ways and I can get it in the water easily. 6hp outboard, trolling motor, or oars. Short portages are doable as long as the path is wide enough to accommodate the cart. I prefer the small boat for camping trips because I don't have to worry about covering the boat when it rains. |

I catch the biggest fish. QueticoMike is still hoping to catch his first smallmouth bass. We're all rooting for him. |

missmolly: "Welcome. Two things you should know about the site: Duly noted! I'm sure that's an inside joke, but QM is welcome to join me on the Mississippi river for some rip-rap smallmouth. No giants but they're here, and open to year-round catch & release on the stretch I fish. |

But my catching the biggest fish is no joke. Here's a crappie I caught last week on Basswood: |

I'm based in St. Paul and I spend a big chunk of my summer fishing pool 2 of the Mississippi with my 10-year-old son. We fish from an old 14ft aluminum boat, no canoe unfortunately. Looking forward to talking feesh with you all :) |

So, your first BWCAW trip? LOTS of info here in all of the forums. Nose around and ask a question in the threads on specific topics of interest. Nobody is going to turn you away. Just don't blame us for the many hours you'll spend here (or the $$ spent on all of the great gear ideas you find)... |

While missmolly is an excellent fisher, i suggest having your waders handy....because if she is talking, it may get deep. Any questions? See above posts. Haha!! Welcome to the site, lots of good info , and friendly leg-pullin’! First thing, get that article from QM." Thanks Mike! Yes, we exchanged messages and you sent me the Grand Slam article which I read with interest. I'll follow up for more, to be sure. Much appreciated! Thanks again to everyone above for the warm welcome. |

Not sure if you sent me a request for any of my articles or not. I have 4 or 5 you might be interested in. One is geared toward the Grand Slam species, pike, bass, walleye, lake trout. The rest are for smallmouth bass fishing. Send any requests for articles to - queticomike@yahoo.com. Good luck this year! |
