I've always used a variation of plain Octopus hooks along with different style and color jigs including on the tip ups. That is if we were using the tip ups to target walleyes. Any time live bait is used I go single hook. The only time I've used a treble is for smelt to protect the setup from pike.

Hmmmm, interesting comment about mortality but from everything I have read, I don't recall that being an issue. I may have to give that a try if a lose a fish or two on the tipup.

My experience with live bait and a treble hook if it is swallowed deep at all you have multi hooks trying to remove deep. Especially many times a tipup they may have run with it and it had time to swallow deeper.

Anyone ever use a circle hook? If so how did it work?

When ice fishing (for Walleye specifically) using a bobber and/or a tip-up, what kind of hook do you use and why? I have always use a straight Octopus hook, but as I study for my Mille Lacs trip I am reading that a lot of folks use treble hooks. I have never even heard of that and wonder how you hook your minnow with a treble? Are two of the treble hooks just protruding out from the top of the minnow? Any tips or preferences on the hook would be appreciated.

For Mille lacs-mostly catch and release I would really worry about hooking mortality with live bait and treble hook.

I have only ever used a treble hook on a tip-up. One of those situations where at age 9 going ice fishing with Dad... that's the way it was, so I never questioned it. And yes, just bait-up on one hook and leave the other two protruding. Have caught walleyes and never a mortality problem.
