If you had to give these lakes a relative rating per species what would it be? Assume ideal fishing conditions, presentation, etc. 10 out of 10 is a fish every cast. 1 out of 10 is a fish per day. Lakers Walleyes Small-mouth Pike |

My group is BWCA experienced but hasn't been there in about 10 years. We are looking for a base camp option with excellent walleye fishing and not too crowded, if possible. I plan on bringing live bait (leeches) and a depth finder as I just picked up a portable striker 4 for Xmas. There are so many good lakes up there and I’m sure everyone has their personal preference but I’m just wondering if you think Ogish should scratch our itch? Thanks for the feedback |

alpine is known primarily for walleyes , very few lake trout but holds some nice pike. but it seems alpine has seen it's better years , havent read many favorable reports on fishing lately . still a descent walleye lake thou jasper has a very good population of lake trout in that #2-#3 range and holds some big pike and walleyes too, the thing with jasper is the campsites when the fire went through there , jasper looked like a bomb went off, the site by the kingfisher portage is probably the best site on this lake , campsite #800 maybe the worse site in the bwca. kingfisher lake holds some fish , most fish the water coming from ogish. but being a lake with no campsite on it , one never knows if it might hold a trophy smally ?? ogish itself , i never have fished just traveled through it many times , beautiful lake and you should be able to catch enough fish for some meals + if anyone in your group gets very adventurous holt lake does not see many people and does hold nice lakers and pike but i believe it is part of the PMA so no cleared portages to get there. moving past ogish annie lake ,, i did see a fish jump there once LOL jenny mainly pike a very average fishery eddy lake is a sleeper lake for very big pike , but with the SAK right there and able to hit the grandslam possibly on a daily basis , eddy doesnt see a ton of pressure either. but i've always wanted to hit eddy like mid june and strictly target big pike with big lures and maybe some big deadbait from shore. whenever i do my may trips i always bring in frozen suckers in a little 6-pack type cooler for shore fishing from camp. people will bring up ciscoes and smelt but here's the advantage to suckers , smelt and ciscoes are more oily and thus attract better BUT they turn to mush so fast, with suckers i run a #2 hook through the skull and it stays on for most of the day. |
