Yeah, they are goofy buggers. The official Bass book says if conditions are poor during spawning they will wait and it could be pushed all the way back to fall.

that was a head scratcher, the biggest pike we caught was on basswood right at prairie portage, but landed a couple 32+ inchers on burk and sunday on the the way to camp. the lakers and eyes were southwest of big island in the northeast part of sunday.

I have been to the island 3 times..........once backpacking and twice canoeing. The first canoe trip was a trip which cut across the island via a string of inland lakes. This past trip I went around the island utilizing the park services water taxi to drop me at various places. I come in from Michigan where I spend the summers.

manmountain8: "Your smile in that bass pic made me LOL! "

LOL. I found a school of fall-spawn smallmouth protecting their beds. I could see huge fish and they could not be spooked. I could've beat the water with a log and they would've come back in 20 seconds. I tried everything in my box but all they would do is push the bait with their nose. So I used some medium live suckers and let them swim free across the beds. The take was so violent that the first 2 snapped me off before I realized that I had to loosen my drag way up. That was the first one I landed after dinking around with them for 2.5 hours so I was excited that I finally figured it out. I got many more after that. Never did get that 6 lb'er I could see though."

The backstory is as good as the smile!

I also use super glue to repair Zulus. A drop underneath the nose ( hook tends to rip open the nose after many fish ) and a drop on the back where the hook penetrates the lure makes these very durable lures last that much longer.

Lips, fins, gill rakers...they all do a number on my hands while up there. Seems like 20 small, sore spots / cuts on each hand is the norm. Maybe a tube of super glue is in order this year. Or a landing glove, which I wouldn't take time to put on while a fish is on.

Do you apply the super glue when the Z-Man is new? Or wait until it starts to tear to add a drop on each spot of hook penetration?
"

Most of the time I wait until the lure gets worked in for a bit.

Super glue really helps all of those little cuts. Seals them up and prevents them from getting bigger.

41"..........I know it looks longer but what made that fish a personal best is how thick it was, a real solid chunk.

QueticoMike: "I really enjoy seeing all of the fish pictures from last year.....keep them coming!"

I wish I had more pics. I formulated my photography plan last spring with a heap of hope, which was to photograph fish against a tape, but the plan sucked. Many fish twitched as I clicked and my camera had a hard time focusing, perhaps because of the reflective water in the bottom of the canoe, plus even the good pics suck because the bottom of my canoe ain't purty. So, I took fish pics the first few days and a few more the last few days, but the middle of my trip went unrecorded, including a 20-inch bass that I caught on my first cast using your swivel method, Mike, with another five bass out of the next six casts with the same method. But here's one more and there might be a few others. It's got a little Cro-magnon bulge above and behind its eye, like an old bluegill or a big walleye, and a thick tail. I look for such indicators of weight.

You need to get something like I use when I go solo in the Boundary Waters. I use an ultra-pod and strap it down on the yoke. Then all you need is a quality 35mm digital camera with a self-timer. You probably already have one of those. They make a few different types of tripods that can be wrapped around or strapped to something. I used to take pictures of fish next to my fishing rod all of the time here on my local river and then post them on fishing forums or Facebook. I would hardly get any reaction on a 19 inch smallmouth. Now I take fish pictures of myself with my phone via a self timer camera function. I just set the timer, angle the phone up from a rock, or a tree, or my hip pack and get a good picture of me and the fish. Now that I do that I get at least 5 times more reactions from a 19 inch fish while I'm holding it compared to it laying next to my fishing rod. I think people just like to see my smiling face ....LOL

Is this question directed towards me or someone else? If it was geared towards me I don't use braid except when fishing a Lucky 13. I only use a mono leader if I am fishing with ZMAN ShadZ ( aka Zulus ) or ZMAN RaZors. If this question is for someone else, please specify.

All of the fish in this post were caught in Quetico in late May or early June of 2017. All of the fish in the pictures from the original post at the top of this thread were caught on the same trip in 2017 except for one of them was caught in late August in the Boundary Waters last year. Fishing was tough last August for me and many others who fished during that same time frame.

Little added comment about Berkley XL Smooth Cast:
10# XL will land about anything BW freshwater will throw at you. A few years ago, I hooked a big redfish in LA...my 6'6" MF St Croix Premier rod, Shimano Sahara 2500, XL 10#. Set drag tight enough and slowed him down, then was reeling him in, only to have "the line break". Reeled it in and it was actually the guide's kahle hook he had given me that bent to let the fish escape. At that point, I was very confident in landing most smallmouth, walleye, and pike (beside occasional break off due to teeth) on even 6 or 8 lbs. XL smooth cast line.

I'm now thinking someone should make a Bass grabber thumb cover!!! This is really great thread, so many awesome pictures!

That walleye is my best to date...not huge, but was a real surprise when virtually everything else we were catching was 14 - 18" long. This one probably came close to 25", but seemed to be an old, tired, skinny Jack. "

Your smiles are friggin' huge! "

Not sure I've ever laughed so much in 5 days as I did with those 3 dudes! A truly great trip for the memory books.

They already make these.......

Thumb Glove "

Duct tape works also"

I've done that before in the past for just thumb coverage :) Super glue makes it easier to cover all of those little holes and cuts all over the hands and fingers.

In that pike picture, what is that in the background on the right hand side? It kind of looks like a dock.

That pike is a horse!"

I thought the same thing.

Say, here's a suggestion for fishers who want to protect big pike to catch them again: Don't pose them vertically. Big fish can suffer organ damage from squishing when they're held vertically. Look at photos of big muskies posed by dedicated musky fishers and all those fish are horizontal or given some sort of body support.

My only decent fish last year. From a local lake. I didn’t get out much. Going to this year though.

Someone was asking for a pic of my Dad's 24.5 inch Smallmouth from Jackfish in another thread, but I can't find that thread anymore. Was it you QM? This is just a pic of the reproduction. In the pic he has of the fish he's holding it right up against his body and he's worried people won't believe it's as big as it was. It still looks like it goes from his chest to his knees but whatever. His buddy has better pics but apparently he doesn't know how to attach a pic to an email.

Never did get that 6 lb'er I could see though.
