damiki I love zulus and fish them a lot. I wonder if this would be the ticket for fishing deeper water with zulu action? |

QueticoMike: "The description says it doesn't move as good as a fluke. I don't think the fluke works the greatest either compared to a ZMAN ShadZ. You want a soft plastic jerk bait with that dying flutter , side to side, sub surface walk the dog look. Not one that runs in a straight line. He probably uses a EWG worm hook which increases the keel as well. It doesn't specify how quickly it sinks. It might sink at the same rate as a ZMAN ShadZ ( or Strike King Z-Too ). It mentions using a 1/8 oz weight. I'm sure if you wanted to get the lure down you can use a weighted hook, a standard jig head or even a Carolina rig. Mike, do the ShadZ sink? |

ZMAN ShadZ and Strike King Z-Too slowly sink, a size 3 or 4 ball bearing swivel helps too. |

The ZToo by Strike King is a salt impregnated slow sinking jerkbait made with the revolutionary Elaztech material. These minnow shaped lures are tremendous fish catchers. The ZTOO is impregnated with salt to give it a slow sinking action. It fishes like a traditional soft plastic jerkbait and the rate of sink can be varied by the size and weight of the hook. It is the favorite of many anglers and drop-shotting it is a closely guarded secret. |

I did try adding weight to the zulus one trip on Basswood and my wife did catch a chunky 19 inch Largemouth on a 15-20 foot point, but we did not fish it much. Always looking for alternatives to try. T |

timatkn: "Mike do you ever go during the dog days of August? A lot of the bigger smallys seem to be deeper so I don't usually use Zulus...have you tried adding a weight like a big split shot to work it deeper? Or should I stick with jigging/rigging/cranks for these deeper fish. I am talking 15-30 feet deep. I have tried Zulus but they just don't get deep enough. I've been up there many times in late August\early September. In 2007 I fished every day of August in the Boundary Waters. The thing is I fish mostly moving water during this time. I fish at the top of a river (falls), the river itself in certain pockets, and at the bottom where it flows into the next lake. If the Zulus (ShadZ) aren't working I switch to fish deeper with green pumpkin tubes with 1/8 oz jig heads. I have used weighted jig heads to get a Zulu to go deeper, worked fine in the areas I fished. There are plenty of options to get this lure deeper. 1) drop shot 2) split shot weight 3) Carolina rig 4) standard jig head 5) Texas rig. |
