Two of us in a group of 8 targeted Lake Trout in Oyster in late June last year, and each of us caught one. First we had ever caught in our 3 years of making any sort of effort.

We were staying at the north campsite on the east shore of the lake, and we just trolled back and forth from off the point of the peninsula north of camp to just south past camp. We had a fish finder and were seeing schools of fish anywhere from 30' to 70' down. Both of us caught ours on a 30' deep diving Rapala taildancer. We each had a missed strike or two besides the one we caught. It absolutely made our trip.

Not a whole lot of luck for other fish on that lake, though earlier in the trip I caught a really nice Smallie on Little Shell. Was about 18" and fought harder than any other bass I'd caught before.

I think we are going to stay away from camping on Shell, but we might take a day trip over there. From what I saw on the trip planning forum, they are having bear trouble on that lake.

Thanks for the tips!

For some reason, my reply posted twice. Sorry about that.

Yep, one of those bear posts was from myself. You can see my photo of the bear if you visit one of those threads. We were visited twice in the span of about 10 minutes, but we were lucky and did not lose any food (helped having a group of 8 guys who all happened to be in camp at the time). A young male that is not at all afraid of people unfortunately.

Has anyone fished this area? We want to primarily catch smallmouth and walleye while we are there. We are going in through EP16 and base camping in the Oyster area for 10 days.

We are also taking gear to catch lake trout. How is Oyster for lakers? I know it is supposed to hold them, but I haven't found much regarding how good the fishing is in that particular lake.

If anyone has any tips, I would sure appreciate it!
