Pinetree: "I will say this time of year the Triangle area will be packed with people." This is the week we went in last year at South Farm and base camped on Clear. Hardly anyone there early in the week, and it got a bit more active later on. (Especially when considering the group of 21 day tripping through...) |

Pinetree: "I will say this time of year the Triangle area will be packed with people." This time of year as in right now...or...this time of year referring to the OP's question about September? It makes sense it will be busier now, as I think about it. |

Fishing that time of year can be rough. It seems to be on and off. Last year the few days before we were there people in that area were catching (50?) walleye a day. This was told to us by two sources. When we were there is was tough going. We barely caught enough to eat a meal a day after fishing for 8-10 hrs. Folks from the campsite next door confirmed that the bite went from fantastic to nearly zero. No sour grapes here, I love to be out there, but after years of fishing up there with very mixed results, I've learned a few things. 1. Sometimes the fish win. 2. Start shallow and go deeper, if need be. 3. Be willing to try different things. 4. Try fishing structure, but if they're not biting, try a different technique or a different spot. A lot of our fall fish have been caught on deep running lures out in the middle of nowhere. There is an island near that campsite that is supposed to be great (see attached picture). We had lousy luck around it, but it was producing the days before. Definitely worth trying. I'm not expert, but happy to share everything I know about fall BWCA fishing via call or email. We'll actually be up there starting on the 15th, but in a different area. |

gripper: "We are going in at Kawashawi River North the third week of September. Our first trip. My teenage boys and I are novices at ficshing. Any help with tips for SMB and Walleyes would be appreciated. Planning on heading down to the triangle area. Possibly over towards Gabro. Seven days. Thanks in advance." We are headed there on Monday for a similar route and I'll happily share anything we learn. |
