Gas is not the problem. Motor is the problem. Hand auger required.

So the answer is I probably still have to use the hand auger in the bdub, but does anyone know if you can use an electric or propane auger. I don’t really see what the problem would be since it’s not gas.

…I didn’t see anyone asking for opinions about this? It’s alright, I’m still learning too and make the same mistake…but opinions about something that wasn’t asked are rarely accepted well :)
Back on topic…love the NILS, great purchase. 12” of ice or less I can almost beat a motor auger. Gas auger I maybe can when ya factor in start up. The strikemaster with Swedish blades is a good one too, but reach for the NILs before that one.

" With the nils 6 inches I can go thru like 30 inches in maybe 25 seconds. They're fast. I have both the 6 and 8 inches . Most winters they are almost sold out for the winter by now. Getting blades sharpened on my 6-inch right now in Duluth. It really matters how many holes you plan to drill and what for?

End of season I usually put WD-40 or oil on the blade to prevent rust.

channelcat: "Leave your battery power electronics home also" we all enjoy the bdub differently no need to be rude and this kind of comment is why I hate posting/reading anything on these sites/Facebook. I bring my Garmin with me so according to you I’d have to leave that at home I use my phone for pictures and I bring fish finder. Thanks for your comment but I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.

That’s why I asked about a battery powered auger didn’t know if the rules have adapted to the new equipment.

Well the rules aren’t going to adapt to battery powered augers ever…the rules are for banning mechanized/motored powered equipment…it’s not about the gas motor it’s about any motor. Heck even ole fashioned row boats and fixed sails are banned…as well as wheels…anything that gives you a mechanical advantage.
Electronics and batteries are not banned though.
Hopefully that makes sense?

Hand auger only, no motor of any type.
Same reason you can't use a Minn Kota on your canoe all over the BW.
Nils is the best hand auger, but you'll spend a couple hundred on one. Strikemaster Lazer is the nicest of the sub-$100 augers

Yep no motorized augers allowed. I recommend getting the 6" nils convertible which packs well for BWCA trips and when outside of the bwca you can pair it with a nice Milwaukee drill and get through 2 feet of ice before your buddy can get his gas auger started...

Agree with this, NILS are rock solid, and cut super fast.

Life ain't for sissies. You gotta be tough. Comments come across differently on-line than in conversation. Your question was answered... then the conversation drifted (or was hijacked) off topic.
I still find it interesting how many different ways there are to enjoy the Canoe Wilderness. And that is what keeps me active on this forum.
