1980 Mowe Lake I was 16 and a friend let a full stringer drift away. With no time to disrobe, I dove over the side and will never forget the surreal experience of swimming underwater following a stringer of fish.

He didn't have his "baggies" (surf trunks) with him when we went to clean the fish.

We had an interesting dilemma this year on Kashahpiwi--our Quetico conservation licenses allow each of us 2 walleyes and only one can be over 18". Almost all of the walleyes we were catching were over 18".

We rarely eat more than two meals of fish on a typical 10-day trip, and never keep trophy fish. We have even given up fishing bass on nests. In this case we were base-camped and our two canoes went their separate ways with the intention of catching fish for a meal and ended up with a couple more than we would have normally kept, although we like to fry or grill up a good mess of fish so we have enough for a second meal of fish chowder, so nothing goes to waste.

A glance at the picture had me wondering what lure he used.

Fishing with my son on Ogish. Hooked a big smallie and reached behind me for my fold down net....gone. Landed the fish and pulled up onto the little island behind us. We hadn't moved much, fishing the deep slot between the tiny island and the main bank. The net was black and I figured we wouldn't see it but walking back and forth, my son spotted the tiny silver spring button on the handle in 12-15 FOW I guessed. Stripped down to my skivies, waded out and dove. I couldn't see well but I just swept my hand in the general area and hooked the netting. Small victories can be the highlight of your day sometime.

when your stringer of walleyes and bass swims away?

We didn't want to clean fish near our island campsite (gulls, otters and snapping turtles are more of a hassle than bears) so three of us paddled over to a point and started working on our three stringers of fish. When we realized one of the stringers was out about 15' and down about 10' JW, who grew up surfing in Southern California where the winter water temps are in the 50's, went after them without a second thought.

We had an interesting dilemma this year on Kashahpiwi--our Quetico conservation licenses allow each of us 2 walleyes and only one can be over 18". Almost all of the walleyes we were catching were over 18".
