I was in this area 5 years ago and it was one of my better trips fishing wise in the boundary waters. Stayed one night on Gabbro, one on Pietro, and one on Bald Eagle. Gabbro is a big lake and has some really good fishing spots to check out. The fishing spots on the maps section of this site would give you some ideas and what type of fish is caught in each spot. We has success at both the rapids in and out of Gabbro. Our best lake for success was Pietro though. We had non-stop action from about 4 in the afternoon to dark. Mostly smalmouth but towards dusk we caught some nice walleyes as well. Between 3 of us fishing we had to have caught 75 smallies, 15 walleyes, and a few northern. Fished a little on Gull on the way through and caught a few in like a half hour and were going to come back but there was no need to once we got to Pietro. Didn't fish Turtle at all because I hate northerns!

I have been to Gabbro a couple of times in May. Check out the trip reports by thlipsis29. We did well with big pike, crappie, eater walleye, big perch and some nice smallies. I am interested in mid to late summer reports this year, Gabbro is one of our options for the 3rd week of August.

The channel from Little Gabro to Gabro has always produced walleye for us along with a couple of red eyes. Another place which is fun and produces a lot of fish is the small river/creek and small water fall on the north end of Little Gabbro. Great location where you can get out of the canoe and fish and explore alittle.

First time in this area for me. Does anyone have experience in this area durring Early July?

My son wants to fish smallies, but I'd rather catch Walleye, and northerns are allways fun. Thanks.

I will definitely look for you on Friday. I'll be easy to spot. Not too many other camo Golden Hawk canoes there I'm betting. The other family we're going with will be renting kevlar canoes. I guess I'm just a glutten for punishment.

I fished Gabbro and Bald Eagle about 10 years ago. All the suggestions will get you on fish. I was fishing it before a lot of online info was available so I just Lindy rigged and drifted across the main body of Gabbro. Just keep letting out enough line to stay in contact with the bottom. You should catch enough walleye to eat and get some smallies thrown in. Once you hook a fish or miss a bite, through a marker and drift that spot again. If you get bit in that same spot, then stop and jig. Every serious fisherman should have a marker or two in the canoe. You can cover a lot of water by drifting and find those spots holding fish and then zero in on them by jigging.

Not the easiest portage. There is a really cool feature about half way across. You're walking along and it flattens out a bit and you look to the side and see this large crack/gap in the rock with a pretty large drop right in the middle of the trees.

So you are coming out on Friday? We may run into each other, we're going in Friday. You'll have to give me updates on the fishing if we do :)

We have heard stories about the northerns on Turtle. We will definitely do that at least once. I hear the portage is no fun getting there though. I wonder how well they'll bite in July though??

Email sent. Just reread your note, if you have time for a day trip to Turtle lake it's a fun pike lake. Make sure to tell your son to keep his fingers out of the water :) a pike hit my lure so close to the boat last year (less than 6 inches) it splashed me. Never saw it coming, must have come from under the canoe.

BWCA and forum noob here that will also be taking my first, of hopefully many, trip up there next month and staying on Gabbro. Any fishing advice would be greatly appreciated.

gsfisher13, I'll send you a pm...if you're willing to share your map with another our group would really like some info.

Thanks in advance for the info I take off here in the next few weeks!

Erik

Edit:
Sorry to drag up an old post...found it on the search. I checked the dates, but I'm a little tired and saw that 2012 as a 2015.
