Is there any bait shops in or around Grand Marais? I looked up the beaverhouse but it says it is closed.

I picked some up at the Holiday Station in Tofte over Memorial Day weekend.

You can either get them at Bucks, Holiday (in GM) or the Beaverhouse

Doing some planning for our trip in early June. We'd like to buy a couple pounds of leeches before we head up the Gunflint. Is Buck's Hardware the best place? I tried calling The Beaverhouse and no one answers.

Buck's is open now, and beaverhouse should be open by June (they don't open until fishing opener typically). The Holiday in town has live bait too, but I don't usually buy mine there. I would call before coming up - bait along with everything else related to fishing has had issues in the supply chain.

How much are leeches in Tofte? I think they are $25 per pound at the hardware store in Grand Marais.

I was at the Holiday station in Tofte this weekend and they were selling them by the dozen in the small white containers and not by the pound. I think they were $2.25/doz.

Beaver House in GM has leeches.

I bought by the pound last spring at Beaver House, but I really think Buck's is a cool store in GM. Any last needs for tackle / supplies, you should be able to find it at Buck's.

I'm going to be leaving out of VNO in Ely and their leech prices are $24/lb. Is that a reasonable price?
I'm going solo...wanting to concentrate heavily on fishing for walleye and smallies and read on some other threads about figuring out how many to take in. I'm thinking I might get 4# worth as I'd rather throw away a pound rather than run out on day 5.

Four pounds of leeches will be overkill, unless you're going in for a month or more. If fishing HEAVILY (6-8 hour), 3-4 dozen per day will be sufficient. A pound of smaller leeches will contain up to 20 dozen/lb., medium sized leeches have about 14-16 dozen/lb., large leeches have about 10-12 dozen/lb., and a pound of Jumbo leeches would have about 8-10 dozen/lb. I have seen TRUE Jumbo leeches that had as few as 5 1/2 dozen/lb., but that is an exception to the rule. The larger the leech, the more a pound of them cost.

Is there any place to get bait in Lutsen?
We will be staying a night at the Lutsen resort then heading up the Caribou Trail for a few days.
Just wondering if I should grab some in Tofte and keep it alive an extra day or if I can get some in Lutsen the day we head out.
Is there a big difference between the leech and crawler bite up there this time of year?
EDIT- Did some googling it looks like they sell bait at the Clearview General Store in Lutsen.

Can you you buy your fishing licenses at the Holiday in Tofte as well?

Can't say for sure but I'd imagine so. I don't think I've ever seen a gas station that sells bait but not licences.

Update: I tried calling the Beaver House again and the number is non-working. I called Buck's Hardware, someone answered who gave me to the live bait person and I ordered our leeches. Easy peasy. The guy was more than happy to help me.
For early June, the leeches will be a mixture of mediums to jumbos. Perfect. We'll pick up some nightcrawlers while we're there, too.

I usually buy them at the Holiday Station. I purchase 2 lbs. for 3 to 5 days for 4 to 8 people. I have used them all up only once and we ran out on the morning we headed out on the last day of the trip.

Does everyone know this is a two year old thread? I'm sure by now Hawkeye has found some bait.

This is terrific advice. Thanks

I was at Beaver House last Thursday and picked up some leeches. I also may be late to the party on this, but they were in some soaked worm bedding (or leech bedding if it's a different product), and they kept WAY better and were WAY more convenient in the bedding.

amhacker22: "I was at Beaver House last Thursday and picked up some leeches. " Well why don't they have a phone that works? So strange. I'm not sure what a couple pounds of leeches will cost me, but they lost out on that order and anything else that we would have picked up while we were there.
