I really like the Fire line 10lb tracer line. Helps with calculating line out during trolling and while vertical jigging. You can add a fluorocarbon leader if you desire.

Boy do I feel stupid; I should have researched the regulations prior to making reservations; thanks for the info. Looks like we'll be focusing on smallmouth, which is ok with me :-)." You can fish Rainbows Brook Trout and Brown Trout all through October, so that might be an option in addition to Smallies.

Not in streams which closes Sept. 30th. Stream trout lakes you can still fish them as I am sure is what you meant.

i believe smallmouth bass is also closed, or is catch and release only, on inland water lakes beginning sept 11. bass is open on mn/canada border lakes until 2/26/17.

While not wrong, That may be misleading in that you would assume you can keep smallies until 2-27-2017, so ill just add this from further down in the regs so people that don't carry around a regulations book know they can no longer keep small mouth.
09/12/16 - 02/26/17 Smallmouth Bass - 2016 Catch and Release season only (statewide)

Canada/MN border waters
border waters are different than inland lakes. if you open this link and scroll down to smallmouth/largemouth bass it appears you can have 6 in your possession. perhaps i'm not seeing the catch and release part in this border waters rules section? and if crdroste regulation quote is also correct then there is some confusion at the DNR... oh my!

Ahh, yeah I see that now, Thats the link http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/seasons.html Thats where I pulled my information, but in the regulations book I have it does appear they define the Northeast as Open, the term "statewide" from the link i posted is not the word they should use, and it does appear to be open until 2-27-2016 There are too many regulations in this state.

quote bwcahuggy: "I wanted to ask why would they close the season so early? Yes and actually around October 10th the DNR will be collecting eggs on Mountain lake this year.

Coming up in a couple weeks to fish Clearwater for Lakers. I normally use Powerpro with a fluorocarbon leader for smallies. Looking for advice on what to use for lakers. Should I go with just Powerpro line without a leader or will that be too visible to the fish?
Thanks in advance!

Didn't realize that Lakers spawn in the fall; thought all fish did that in the spring. I have no prob fishing for smallies instead; we release everything we catch anyway.

Heading home today, and of course it's mid 60s and warm . We got to Clearwater on Friday and it was 44 degrees. Saturday was windy, rainy and cold. Sunday they had their first frost. Cold fronts suck! 1 fish was all that we caught in 2 days. Beautiful Lake and love the experience at Clearwater Historic Lodge. Will be back in June and hope to fish Caribou and West Pike. Love the Gunflint trail area. Time to get the bow out and practice for deer season.

Clearwater in open water is a tough lake for me to catch fish. That said it is one of my favorite to canoe-I love that lake.
