One of the clearest lakes I've fished in my 20+ trips was the time we went out the Moose Lake route and overnighted in Ashigan Lake....you could see down 20 feet easily. Though back then we ran into some bear trouble and had to scoot on home when yogi took our food bag late that night...that kinda sucked. The smallmouth fishing on that lake was pretty fun if I remember right, we never got much of a chance to do too much fishing, but I remember that. Most of my trips have been up to Basswood, and that water is definitely more stained with tannins. But if I remember right the whole Moose route has lots of clearer water in it.

We have been base camping in basswood for years now. We are considering going to Carp on Quetico side. We are ardent fishermen and basswood is hard to beat. Does Anyone know if Carp is comparable for Smallies and Walleye? It appears to have clearer water than Basswood. We have done Knife and like it but we are not portage hungry. Any info on campsites on northwest end? I guess we are trying to find some new country. Any info would be appreciated. We are going in early June.

Thanks from Chainsaw

what is the best day trip fishing lakes in your opinion. I was looking obviously at Sheridan and the Man Lakes.

Just for the beauty you must spend a day or so going up the man chain.

We did a Carp Lake basecamp a few years back. It was a very enjoyable trip on a nice lake. There are some nice campsites there, but it is a fairly busy lake by Quetico standards. We had good fishing for W, SMB, & NP. For whatever reason, we struggled to get trout there. There are also a few good day trip options. Enjoy, it is a nice area.

Did you do any fishing up the Man Chain? That looks like a doable day trip from Carp basecamp. thanks for the info
