When you bake a cake do you start a twig fire on top, or grab some coals from the fire and put on top...or something else? Do you use it with some kind of stove or over the fire when baking? |

quote Birdknowsbest: Birdknowsbest, Let us know how the fry bake pan works out. I am interested in it as well. I have used cast iron camp ovens before. Mainly in the back yard and sometimes car camping. I am considering the gsi cast aluminum dutch. What I really want to know is, can it bake a cake? Can it bake corn bread? |

quote nctry: "The pan the outback oven comes with is pretty versital I think. Cooking over a fire can be bad if you can't control it. I found I don't always need the whole setup to bake. I've really enjoyed smaller groups and solo's for my smaller outfits. I also like the trips we bring our own everything, no complaining about whats for supper or how it's prepared. The bwj pan is good for groups. I dont disagree the bwj pan is good for groups but the reason I went with fry-bake is bc I get 2 pans that weigh over a pound in total less than the bwj pan |

quote rdgbwca: "quote Birdknowsbest: I did a lot of research before pulling the trigger. I have no doubt it can bake corn bread. I saw a video of someone baking cinnamon buns. I ordered the set with the 10.5 inch and 8 inch pan and tops. I know its spendy, but I have some fun money to burn and it will be my lighter weight camp cook set for many years based on what I have read. I wont be bringing the lid to the 8 inch pan bc the pan will be the lid to the pot we boil water and cook with as well. I can also cook 2 things at once using the fire or fire and my stove. I almost always go with at least 4 ppl and we take a fair amount of rookies, each year, who dont have much gear for the bwca. My theory is me and my tripping buddy have all of the gear, new ppl just have to bring some clothes, headlamps etc and it makes their experience much easier and more enjoyable. I thought about the gsi d.o. but I already have a cast aluminum d.o. but like the gsi you can not fry things upside down on the lid like I can with my cast iron lodge D.O. I find this to be a great feature of that d.o. I think the gsi would be great in the bdubs and I have used mine with groups of 6 or more. We also do a lot more frying of fish, meat potatoes etc so a bigger pan suits my needs more. I realize I could do this in a smaller d.o. but I need more fry space. And we eat a lot of fish so I am hoping this 10.5 inch pan will do the trick. I also bought the cosmetics seconds bc ppl seem to not be able to notice any imperfections. Fry bake 10.5 and 8 inch pan set |

In your case where you provide the equipment, do like I do... I supply the equipment, they supply the muscle. You paid for it, they carry it. Seems fair to me. Once they experience the wilderness combined with 5 star dining, they will generally carry anything. If you want to save weight, bring a reflector oven. |

We are not ultralight trippers but we like to keep weight at a minimum but I want something I can use on the fire grate, put on the coals or use on my stove. The Fry bake looks like a great contender. I really like that its only 19 oz and you can get a top for it and use it like a mini d.o. The BWJ pan is almost 4 pounds. I have searched this forum and I know ppl love the BWJ pan but we also have a another cookset that weighs around 3 pounds that has a small frying pan, plates, silverware, a pot to boil water and cook in and my Dragonfly fits inside of this setup. Adding another 4 pounds seems like a lot to me, but we need a bigger pan to fry fish in and other general cooking for 4 people. I know Dave and Amy Freeman used the Fry Bake 8 inch diameter Deep alpine pan for their trip. I did a search on the forum and only found one person who had used the 8 inch for a solo mission. It seems its just what I am looking for. That guy had a youtube review and he loved his but he used an 8 inch pan for his solo trip. The 10.5 inch Fry bake pan is 19oz. plus 10oz for the lid. Under 2lbs vs 4 pounds for a similar price. Anyone else here have experiences with this pan? Fry Bake 10.5 inch pan |

We have used this 12" pan for almost 10 years now. Mostly over the fire, but some on a single burner camp stove. Is it the best one you can buy? No. But it does the job and is great for frying fish over the fire and much lighter than the BWJ pan. I sewed a pouch for it to keep the soot off other items and it fits perfectly at the top of our blue barrel. GSI Fry Pan PS. The first thing I did was snap off the small fixed handle, It's useless and won't fit in the barrel with it attached. |

quote BigCurrent: "Other than frying fish, what will you be using the pan for? Are you actually going to use it for baking? If not there are countless options out there that are much more affordable. We may do some baking. But mostly cooking potatoes, pancakes etc. We do love to cook in a D.O but I dont want to bring one with if I dont need to. I have looked into the GSO aluminum do but my only issue is that I cant use the lid with my dragonfly. Mostly it will be used for frying meat etc on the fire or stove. |

One liter pot and lid with a 16oz sierra cup that fits just inside suspended. DO from a 2 liter pot and inverted lid to bake bannock for sausage gravy (in the small pot. I have used 14 inch al. pizza pans as frypans with other campers, frying fish and potato pancakes, over the fire grate. A single burner stove does have it's pan size limitations. The Banks FryBake looks very good (I have used steel gold pans the same way), but again size of cooking amount can decide. butthead |
