Just yesterday pulled the trigger on this "Helinox knock-off" myself when the price dropped down to $27.

I only wish this were true. One can pay a little or a lot and still get exactly the same item many times. Sometimes it is because of a brand name on the item, sometimes it is just excessive profit for someone."

Very true. I don't know how good some these are, but they COULD be just as good as he Helinox. Time will tell.

I'm a little smaller but I bought one of these and it has held up on a couple trips with no issues. It looks like it might be the exact same chair even.

I went to Sam's Club last night and bought one of their Portal ultra light camping chair (which the link above will take you to) and I think it is a GOOD cheap knock off of the big boys. It is VERY similar to my old school REI Flexlight chair. Im not a fan of the look of the new REI chair, seems to me it would be unbalanced and "tippy".

Anyway, this Portal chair is a little heavier but seems very similar. $25 is a great price also. I would recommend it vs the very pricey alternatives. I of course have not used it camping yet but think it will be great for the BW or Q.

Just my 2 cents.

I just went to Ace to check it out. The tubing is definitely steel and heavy. It packs down small but it was heavier than I wanted so I took a pass.

I just picked up the Wally World version for $15. $15 is a lot more reasonable experiment than $50-$60.

Me too. Ah well. If it looks too good to be true...

Helinox knockoff

I cannot vouch for them, have not seen them - maybe they are crap or too heavy... but worth a look at $20!! My local flyer says kid version is $13.

EDITED... not worth it unless you like the seat better than a regular camp chair. Too heavy for backpacking, but comfortable and compact. Sits as high as a regular camp chair.

The description states that the frame material is steel... If going with a knockoff, can find the aluminum on ebay for 20-25 shipped...

Look at the frame closely. It is much different than a Helinox. Different frame design and frame material.

I purchased a pair from my local Sam's club for our June Quetico trip. They seem to be made well enough, held my weight when I sat down and was comfortable. I don't have the name brand chair to do a direct comparison.

Make sure the support poles are seated all the way before using. The first time I set it up, it looked unbalanced and upon closer inspection, one of the poles wasn't inserted all the way. Luckily I saw that before sitting in it.

Sam's club has a good return policy if it doesn't live up to your expectations.

Also, of note, Sam's has some nice long and short sleeve Habit fishing shirts for $16. Very nice for the price.

Any word on this chair from Sam's?

I have a REI flexlite that I bought a couple years ago when there were not all the cheap knock offs. I love it but the price is SO high compared to similar ones now.

Looking for some to recommend to friends for our up coming trip and get one for my son.
